Pilot Wounded....effecting the gunner?

In a bomber like a B-17 or Lanc that has 5 or 6 guys manning it, why would the pilot being wounded inhibit the rest?  We've got co-pilots and such  :-)

I understand the pilot taking a hit, but not being able to fend off attacking aircraft (because you are passed out) seems silly, knowing a crew of people ran these airplanes in real life.
