Precision Landing
« on: February 02, 2009, 03:15:39 AM »
Gliders are the ultimate in energy management and I think we could all learn alot from flying one. This is a precision landing in a glider and its very cool!  :aok

Except for the fact that he was right of the centerline.

Not at all interested in aviation, but if i had to start flying then gliders would be my fist choise. Maybe mostly its because its kinda like sailing. On second place it would be helicopters.  :aok

Spoilers. In that video you can see one coming out of the top of the wing. Spoil the airflow and you lose some of your lift.

Actually if I remember correctly, the brakes (spoilers) on the ASK21 are speed limiting so that would actually make them air-brakes.

Um... what exactly was so precise about that? Thats what all of my landings look like, with little to no effort. No, scratch that, I usually touch just right of the centerline (The left side of the tarmac tends to be covered in planes and tourists, and several pilots have had near collisions because of someone else running onto the runway at the last second. Its safer to land to the right of the runway) and I stop either right behind the tow plane, or near the parking area. I'm not saying this pilot wasn't good, that landing just really didn't look all that special.

And yes, I have a glider pilot's license. Theyre very fun, and I find them MUCH easier to land than powered aircraft.
