Curious Question for the FSO organizers
« on: April 22, 2009, 12:57:06 PM »
I'd like to preface my question by saying that this isn't a criticism of teh FSO or how it is operated.  Not at all.  In fact, FSO is probably the only thing that keeps me interested in AH2 right now.

I'm curious why, after an FSO event, there is a ranking for Objects Destroyed instead of some kind of Points Destroyed?

I noticed this after last Fridays event...  You see, I was flying Bostons...  I was assigned a Fighter Hangar as my primary target, which had a point value of 449 points...  I released my ord and killed my target, as well as a field gun that got clipped collaterally.  So, I was credited with the destruction of 2 Objects...  Now, my question is, why should a pilot who gunned down three Field Guns be given a higher position in the rankings?  Or even on the flip side, I happen to know of a squaddie who took down 2 Hangars...  Why should my accomplishment be considered equal (as far as the pilot rankings go) to that of the guy who only hit two objects but happened to both be high value targets?

Is it simply a matter of not wanting to spend the time to calculate individual Pilot's scores?

Just curious.

Thanks for all of your efforts!  I look forward to Friday night's event!

Are you talking the FSO logs over on the events site?

If so that would because different CMs assign points differently to objects. Also the raw logs that we get from HTC doesn't say anything except that X object has been destroyed. It doesn't really differentiate that it takes Y bomb damage to kill a fuel bunker and Z damage to kill a Fighter Hangar.

Individual CMs make that distinction and assign point values based on their design (some even increase hardness at times if there design calls for it .. but that hasn't been done in a while).

I was just referencing what you see on the AHEvents site...  http://ahevents.org/index.php?Itemid=112&option=com_staticxt, look at the summary for Jubilee Frame 2 for example.

Specifically, I'm talking about the box that lists Top 10 Pilots (Objects Destroyed)

Yep that is what I am talking about. The raw logs just say object destroyed. The programming on the event site just tallies those up and produces that results .. a basic object count. They don't take into account that some objects take more to destroy than others. Its basically a programming issue.

The log parser just counts objects destroy, not what was destroyed.  Due to how the differing CMs score their events, it would be very hard to put that log summary in rankings that would emulate the value the CM put on the target.  For instance, we've had frames where a specific pilot was worth 5x or 10x the points of a standard pilot now shooting down that airplane should rank in the top 10 kills, but it doesn't due to the level of customization per event that would need to be done.

If you dig deeper, you'll see that tied # of objects or kills is also pseudo random in who gets listed and who doesn't.

Yep, what forHim said and remember that even planes are scored a bit differently depending on CM designer. So the logs are a rough guide of how you did while the scores from the CM are the exact guide.

I agree with ghostdancer and ForHim on this as well, but would like to add that..... FSO.....is not necessarily all about individual pilot stats. It's about team work, and that team work encompasses 3 frames.

Oh I agree completely.  I love FSO.

I was simply curious since the Objects Destroyed presents a Top 10 pilots every frame...  It occured to me that it probably wasn't a very good representation of which pilots were truly the most effective.  Obviously, the Top 10 Pilots based on air to air kills is pretty straight forward and easy to grasp.  I was just wondering why the Objects Destroyed was ranked the way that it is...

Thanks for the explanations, everyone.  And thanks for putting your time in to organize FSO.  :salute
