Seafire Question

Any chance of upgunning the Seafire. Those .303's are pretty weak. Heck the 50's are weak compared to canon but .303's are a joke.

Er, that is what it was armed with.

How could "up-gunning" it be rationalized?

S! all

If you want a British Carrier aircraft with big guns, then the Sea Hurricane MK IIC is you best bet.  It is basically a Hurricane Mk IIC with a few minor changes.  It has 4 Hispano Suiza 20mm cannon with 100 RPG.  (Same weapons as Typhoon except for the Ammo load)  Of course, it is a lot slower than the Seafire at Sea level although faster at higher altitudes.  (342mph at 22,000ft)  It weighed 7300lbs on a wing area of 257.5 Sq. Ft. for a wing loading of 28.35 lbs/sq ft.  The wing loading by the way compares favourably with the Seafire but the climb and power would be inferior.

The Fairey Firefly would also be an option.  It was armed with 4 Hispano cannon and powered by a Griffon engine.
