mic issue
« on: July 14, 2009, 06:44:37 PM »
Have been using a USB headset but it bit the dust. Bought a non usb headset and plugged into SB audugy soundcard and I have no mic. Went to settings and I have no sound recorder program. Its just not there. Searched and doesn't come up. I'm back with a usb set up and I have a mic, but is my soundcard even doing anything when I'm using a usb device? Just wondering. Don't know why I don't have sound recoder in windows.

What OS are you using?  There are a few threads here for trouble shooting mics for both XP and Vista.  I posted a step by step guide for Vista setup and troubleshooting.  EDIT: Here is the link http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,265032.0.html

The shortcut may just be missing for some reason... if you're using Vista or 7, try typing "soundrecorder" in the search box in your start menu.

If you're using xp try START/RUN and typing in "sndrec32.exe" (without the quotes).  If that doesn't work open 'my computer' then 'drive c' then 'windows' then 'system32' and look for sndrec32.exe from in there.

See if it will record your voice from there and let us know.  If not then you might have the mic plugged in the wrong spot, or you may need to change the default recording device.

Btw its not really an issue now since I have a usb headset now, was more curious than anything. Wondering if sound card was more or less taking up space more than anything. Thanks

And by the way, windows can only use one sound device at a time.  The USB headset is basically its own sound card, using its own drivers and everything, so to answer your question, while using the USB headset NO the soundcard isn't doing anything.

Have you tried updating the drivers? I know it's not much of an issue anymore. However, I find the quality of the Audigy sound recording to be somewhat better than USB headsets. Heck, it picked up perfect audio quality of someone talking three rooms away. No, the microphone was not high-tech. In fact, it was a miniature Apple microphone.
