NOE Radar in Main Arena
« on: August 29, 2001, 02:02:00 PM »
Been having a blast in Mindanao <SP?> terrain, tried an NOE mission to the penninsula to the east last night, cons were upping before we were halfway there. I know it's been mentioned before, but I think a "Warning System" would be really useful in this situation, while dropping the NOE radar (below 500 ft). If you agree with me, please reply to this thread.

Opinions?

Agree, so long as vehicles still show up on bar radar.

I like the idea of no dar on NOE flights below 500ft.  At the same time along with SW, gv’s would have to be identified somehow.

HBlair, it is a very valid suggestion to drop the NOE radar to below 500 ft. It would open the door to allow sneak attacks that regularly occured during WWII.

I would only add the fact that airbase or ground target radar would show the aircraft as they get within a realistic 5 mile range AND IF AND ONLY IF they are in visual of the airfield DAR.

IMHO - HTC has to remodel the DAR and look at radar stations as ground objects that are placed strategically along a countries border. As the front line is broken/moved, you loose DAR for that area. Airfield DAR in WWII was very limited in it's use.

Agree..nothing below 500 ft. As far as GVs...don't really care either way.

I did an NOE flight a few weeks ago in Baltic.  I went a round about way and found Thunder on the ground in a C47.  I had a B26 and shot him with my front guns and finished him off from the tail position    :)  I thought for sure my position and intent was given away.  I could see dots and icons about all the way.  I made it all the way over the field and dropped my bombs.  I didn't last long in the ack to make a second pass.  I'm sure I can dig up the film if you like to see it.

I think it's fine the way it is.  I don't like "milk running" buffers bombing undefended fields.  A warning system would work, but we have one now.  Part of the fun is reading the map.  If your not watching the map and the movement of the dar bars, it is not always obvious what is going on.  If your going to damage a field or strat target, have the balls to be detected.

Yours Truly,

At 500 ft you are invisible to radar but you're entirely visible to farmers, troops, etc etc and they can phone in a warning.  It's not just radar that gives AC positions in RL, there are observer corps as well.

Question: Were NOE missions used much in WWII and were they successful?  I'm not at all familar with missions and the only NOE one I can think of was a horrible failure: Ploesti.

I think if I had my druthers, I would like to see the DAR bar removed from AH.  I would like to see DAR dots for all airplanes 500 feet above the ground (note: not altitude) and within range of a field radar. I would like to see arena-wide radar removed completely.

I believe this would improve the dynamics of the game.  I believe it would reward aggressive behavior by a country with low numbers.

hblair,

I agree full heartedly with the "Warning system" but, IMHO, bardar should remain in place. Anyhow, it should be (again IMHO) revamped, so that info is only displayed over friendly territory and borderlines. Besides that, sector size has to be doubled or trebled, and have several targets within, so that the "phone" warnings of the population works, but there is still some uncertainty as to where is the real threat.

On this matter, I would also modify clipboard map, so that updates are each 5 minutes or, better yet (and as someone, whose name evades me, suggested), make it updatable only by means of a dot command (i.e. type .radar or .radar 9.11 and you receive a fresh update of the general situation or the sector you are in).

Finally, please, pretty please, GET RID of the GPS. Terrains like Mindanao offer a good bunch of visual references as to know where you are, in terms of navigation and orientation, and it's an unacceptable aid to SA which favours only the lazy and lousy pilots in detriment the careful ones. Unfair to say the least.

Cheers,

Pepe

Sounds good to me.

715,
Mosquito FB.VIs used NOE attacks frequently and with great effect.  Operation Jericho, were Mossie's freed French Partizans from prison is one such example.  Here are a couple of others:

Mosquito Action #1: Operation Carthage
Mosquito Action #2: Destruction of the Dutch Central Population Registry

Intruder missions at low altitude in A20s
were basically what no. 23 squadron of the
RAF did for a living for a while (before that
they flew Blenheim NF, and after Mosquito
NF).They did these missions at night,
though - less chance of being accurately
spotted and identified by the observer
corps. The Luftwaffe did similar missions
using Ju88 and Do. 217 intruder aircraft
of various configurations.

Typically the mission would involve a pass
over an enemy runway to drop small runway
denial bombs, followed by loitering to
catch returning bomber streams.

If the gv damage models were fixed, lose the bar dar under 500ft agl.

Aside from sneak attacks by air, a nice suprize attack with a platoon of armor would be fun.
