SEA info when logging in
« on: July 23, 2009, 10:35:22 PM »
A simple message of the day telling us whats coming up and how long till we have to be in said arena. Mainly for the people who don't live in the USA. I have a world clock on my cell phone but it has been wrong, don't know how but I have missed out by an hour due to it before.
No thank you Turkish, I'm sweet enough.

Maybe even a calendar button in the lobby as well, along with arena messages or messages in the MA. There really needs to be some other way of letting people know that there is an event coming up other than a few people saying it on 200. (Not everyone is tuned to 200.) It would with out a doubt increase special event turnouts at least 2 fold.
This message transmitted on 100% recycled electrons.

I have a photographic memory. The only problem is that sometimes I forget to take off the lens cap.

I agree. More of a sense of integration between Special Events and "MA World" would help increase Special Event participation...particularly for those Snapshots that end up getting an attendance of 12 people.

A world clock would be nice, but let's not make that a priority. I think should be everyone's responsibility to know GMT relative to their location, and adjust it from there. Or if it's easier for the individual, just memorize the time zones. CET= ______. EST(US)= _________. etc. Can completely understand confusion for the Aussies/Asians though, that gets real tough.

thats because DST is enabled on different dates in different timezones. which is why all times for events etc. should be UST (GMT/Zulu), using local time for an international game is nuts.

I think most people do, but until AH starts using UST/GMT/Zulu for times it doesnt help much.

The problem with this request is that the MOTD is just a text file.
There is no way to build an app inside the  MOTD just to tell you what time it is, or how long till an event starts.  What event is coming, yes, that is doable with what we have, if the CM's choose to do so.

The burden lies on us as individuals, if we choose to fly in special events, to know what the time difference is.  And to remind ourselves to be there early or on time.

Part of the problem is that the time is so screwed up between shifting times, daylight savings time, changing dates, that there is no really good time app that I know of that can deal with all of it correctly.

text files are trivial to update, a simple cronjob could check to see if there were any events coming up in the next ? hours, or that day and then update the MOTD accordingly.

as for times for events thats great if you live in the US (most states anyway) and just need the offset from Texas, outside the US (eg UK) you need to know:

1. event time in Texas
2. start of DST for Texas
3. end of DST for Texas
4. UK offset from Texas
5. start of DST for UK
6. end of DST for UK

and then work out whether to add or subtract an hour in the gap between the DST dates.

having dates written eg:
13:15 Monday July 27 GMT (06:15 Monday July 27 ET)

would be alot easier, I just have to remember the offset from GMT is 0 in the winter, +1 in the summer :)
