418th FS B-25H
« on: October 23, 2009, 04:51:58 AM »
Lyric1 found me some photos of this 418th FS B-25H. The 418th traded in their P-70s for B-25Hs and used them for intruder work in the PTO between June and August of 1944 when they converted to P-61As. They lightened the aircraft by removing the top turret and the 75mm gun.

This particular aircraft "Blues in the Night" was flown by Lt. William Ross. It flew 28 combat sorties with the squadron, destroying 20 barges and 2 ships. Lt. Ross (left) and his navigator/radar operator Raymond Duethman can be seen in the photo below. Lyric1 managed to get in touch with Mr Duethman who kindly gave us some feedback on the skin.

This plane has taken me a long time to figure out what colour they painted them. I thought a night fighter B25H would be a nice addition to the game especially when the first book I had showed them to be all black & then to find out none were! others had them overall olive drab completely & just about every colour in between. Bottom line no one knew for sure.

Managed to get hold of Mr Duethman who was not aware that his pictures were in a book called Queen of the midnight skies. He remembered the pictures being taken but never did see them. So it was kind of cool to bring that to his attention & have him get all that information for himself & his family. Here are some more pictures of Mr Duethman & some other planes from that squadron.

Thanks guys, glad you like the skin.

Yes Stokes the terrain in the screenshot is CraterMA. I've been painting the new style textures on to it for the last month or two. Once I'm reasonably happy with it I'll post some screenshots and a link to the res file in the terrains forum so people can fly it offline.

I'll probably submit it again in the next few weeks. After that its a question of when the HTC guys will get enough time to look at it and if they then need it changed in some way and I have to resubmit it again. Don't hold your breath in other words.  :)
