Strange Spitfire CG/FM bug
« on: October 07, 1999, 09:08:00 PM »
Pyro here is some more description of the bug I encountered last night, that I was discussing with you on Channel 1.

I took off in a Spit IX, with a centerline fuel tank, x2 250lbs bombs, and 100% fuel.

I took off from Rooks f18 and flew to Bishops f7, and exhausted my drop tank upon arrival in the combat area. I dropped my centerline tank, and then dropped both of my bombs on f7.

Everything seemed normal up to this point. I then engaged in several fights, getting a couple of kills and an assist.

In my last fight I exhausted all my ammo, including my MG. At this point on my second "weapon" ammo counter, the Cannons designation disappeared entirely (even tho they had been empty for a while). I was also at about 20% fuel left, but I don't know if that contributed to the problem.

When this happened (bingo ammo), my plane developed an extremely strange trim/CG problem. It felt like there was a bomb on the left wing only and it rolled heavily to the left and the nose bounced up and down.

I checked damage and none was indicated on the damage list.

When I autotrimmed, both the rudder & aeliron trim indicators max'd out to the right side. This stopped the left roll but the nose still bounced up and down slightly (with no stick pressure).

If I turned auto trim off I would have to give it approximately 75% right roll to counteract the CG/Trim effect.

The plane was flyable, but just barely.

At this point an enemy Pony decided I would make a good target drone, and attacked me. Sharky protected me for a while, so I could try to figure out what was happening (with the bug), but the enemy finally got me.

Hope that helps.
