firefox question. Private bookmarks
« on: February 06, 2010, 09:22:39 AM »
Is there a way to do this?

Basically have separate users with their own separate bookmarks area?

Obviously there are some bookmarks I'd like to keep private from my kid.
And to add to that. Neither my wife nor my daughter have any concept of origination when it comes to categorizing bookmarks.
I'd like to have seperate logins to firefox for each of us, with each having their own private bookmarks area.

That way. They can live with their messes. And I can have mine all nice and tidy and be able to find a bookmark without having to wade their landfill of stuff.

There are lots of add-ons for firefox. This might work for you https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410

Why not just create them their own user account in windows, then nobody has to use your browser and you don't have to mess with theirs.

If you want you can create multiple Profiles.  Then when Firefox starts you select which one you want to use for that session and when you close Firefox it will ask what Profile to load at next startup.

How to do it is here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles#Starting_the_Profile_Manager

Anyone can start your, but you can set it to start someone's profile besides yours and if no one knows how to change them except you it would work.

One advantage here is that the wife and kid's accounts can be members of the plain old "Users" group, while you can reserve membership in "Administrators" for yourself alone.

One of the advantages of setting yourself up admin, is that you can limit where your kids can go to on the net. I don't know their ages but I had to do this with my ex's kids because the boy was caught in an adult video chat room. Needless to say it took all my strength to hold my ex back from beating him with the computer... I mea, if she did that where could I go play AH?
