F6F doing an inverted negative g loop from 150 feet
« on: February 14, 2001, 02:15:00 AM »
A while back I mentioned that the F6F could do it, and someone asked me if I really meant "upside down outside loop" or something like that.

Well it can. Speed 280 altitude roughly 150 feet, 100% fuel.

for film.

In case geoshitties messes up, just go up to location field, , place cursor behind last letter and hit enter. Then the download continues (dunno why you get these weirdo errors with geoshitties)

I dunno. Could real life F6F do this?

Effects of inverted flight on oil injection is not modeled in AH... this would not allow it to do that in real life.

Nath do you think the plane would be inverted long enough for engine failure? Just wondering if it might be able to do one but not any more.

I saw a F4U do one at an airshow in the 60's...and Hellcat has basically the same engine, so, I would say, yes.

Plus the Hellcat's thrust line is about 3º down iirc - that probably helps.

I can't get to the zip file to d/l from that address.

However, if you're doing an outside loop..pushing the stick forward...I'd be simply amazed if almost any WW2 fighter would outside loop in 150 feet.

I gotta go try this!

<edit>

I can't get it to outside loop. Pushing the stick forward and going down and around the outside of the loop results in instant death for me.

It will easily do a normal loop in this situation. In fact, I can easily gain about 800 feet if I pull a bit harder down the back side.

Still not sure exactly what maneuver you are doing though. Split S from 150' is an instant splatter for me too.

I think he means roll inverted first and then push up through an inverted loop.

Yeah, outside loop from inverted. Since this was first done around 1919 (end of WWI), I believe the F6F would do it with no problems.

K-factor 1, Toad.

I wonder if we could augment the air races with a full FAI F3A aresti schedule? I think the Niki, or 109 with 25% fuel would do quite nicely! Man, that would really be fun!

Juzz, every single aircraft in the set has an offset thrust line. It has nothing to do with how well an aircraft does an outside loop. You're not the first to make that mistake, though.
