P-38L engine power problem?
« on: October 09, 2000, 12:56:00 AM »
I was looking at this P-38L Takeoff, Climb and Landing Chart at www.zenoswarbirdvideos.com  and decided to compare it to the AH P-38L.

The "combat" climbrate from S/L to 5000ft is listed as 3200fpm for a weight of 17400lb. In AH the P-38L with 100% fuel and max ammo climbs at 3100fpm. About a 3% difference.

The "ferry" climbrate from S/L to 5000ft is listed as being 1400fpm. In AH the P-38L only climbs at about 900fpm. 500fpm lower!

Why?

This Specific Engine Flight Chart lists the engine power as 1425HP for "combat" and 795HP for "ferry".

My guess is that the AH P-38L isn't producing the correct HP at the "ferry" power setting. The real problem is that this will mean that cruising speeds would be significantly lower than they should be at the lower power settings.

PS: I also compared the P-47D to it's chart, and it matched up pretty good.

That supports the results I got with the Fw 190A-8 at reduced power settings.
