Shadows on other bug.
« on: April 24, 2010, 06:41:43 PM »
I was playing around offline and i notice the new shadows on other option. After enabling this, I found that my frame rate would drop from 100+ (Benchmark test with Vsync off) all the way down to 1, sometimes maybe even reseting my graphics settings.

I can record with fraps what happens if you need me to.

System info below, it's pretty beast for AH2.

That's happened to me too, and one of my squaddies also.  I have enough puter and ram and vid card to run with everything maxed and shadows on and smoothed at 4k with frames pegged at refresh rate.  Shadows on others brings my computer to its knees for minutes at a time.  I just figured it was something they haven't got fully working yet, didn't occur to me that it might be a bug.  Thanks for posting this.  I think it would be great to have shadows on others enabled.

Hey Kazaa,

I would put money in it that the reason your framerate dies is due to running out of video memory. I had the exact same problem. Before "other self shadows" existed, I was running with Self Shadows on at 4096 size. When "Other Self Shadows" was put in place, I noticed that any time I got near other aircraft my framerate would drop to 0 or 1, and eventually my game would lose connection and timeout. This is with an ATI 5770 with 1GB of RAM.

So my recommendation is, if you have 1GB of video memory, lower your self shadows to 2048 if you're going to use "other self shadows". If you've got 512MB of memory, I'd suggest self shadows at 512 or 1024 MAX with "other self shadows" on.

Here's a link to my own post about this where Skuzzy confirmed it was an out of memory issue : http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,287060.0.html
