Pictures of the terrains
« on: March 27, 2010, 08:22:02 PM »
I have been looking all over the place for copies of the maps used for special events...in jpg or bmp or whatever format they come in. Does anyone on the staff have copies they could give me?

Not sure if I understand your question correctly.. but I know that when I'm putting together orders or whatever, I go load the terrain in offline mode, bring up the clipboard map, zoom in/around as necessary and take a screen shot.

Crop it up with Paint, and you're good to go.

Is that what you're looking for?

Sounds like he needs the Strat Maps.

There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I would love to have the FSO maps be available for download too.  Maybe as a sticky in the forum?

Glad to help.

Let me ask about putting up some kind of sticky link to the strat maps. Have to check with Ghostdancer and the terrain team first.

And just realize that these maps change every time the terrain is modified, so there's a bit of a burden on keeping them up to date.  It would be helpful from an Admin perspective since we wouldn't have to include one with the objectives for each frame.  It would cut the size of each email down significantly.

Will think on this. As Stoney says every time the Terrain team updates a terrain there is a possibility of having to update the strat map. But could check to see if we can also put them on AHevents so that people can just go there to grab strat maps and such. Or I think MrMidi mentioned maybe putting them on AHwiki.

Off-line mission editor maps might help also.

The offline mission editor provides the best method to capture virgin maps of any terrain...depending on your screen size and graphics ability...you can capture pristine icon free images of maps up to 2048 in two tiles...or at 1024 in a single tile...

You can basically capture the underlying bitmap that was used when the terrain was created using the terrain editor...

Unfortunately when Icon's are turned on within the mission editor they do not scale with the map...they are fixed in terms of size relative to the screen resolution...the result is that they are oversize relative to the chosen scale in most cases...and another draw back to the mission editor is that it will not provide base or strat labels identifying the icon features of the map, nor will it provide radar rings or spawns. Lastly it will always show the location of CV's for both sides as placed by the terrain designer at the time he compiled that terrain...

Some of the better maps are those created from a blank underlying bitmap (lifted from the mission editor) and edited manually with a graphics editor to place bases and strat objects...the best maps are created by indexing a bitmap file with a terrain oba file...that's another story though...

Sound idea,,, if this happens to come to be, please re-emphasis that the text orders are the ruling mandate. Just incase something doesnt get updated correctly or inacurrately shown.
