Vega: is the brightest star in the constellation  Lyra, the fifth brightest star in the night sky and the second brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus. It is a relatively nearby star at only 25 light-years from Earth, and, together with Arcturus and Sirius, one of the most luminous stars in the Sun's neighborhood.

Vega has been extensively studied by astronomers, leading it to be termed "arguably the next most important star in the sky after the Sun."[8] Historically, Vega served as the northern pole star around 12,000 BCE and will do so again at 13,727 CE when the declination will be +86°14'.[9] Vega was the first star other than the Sun, to have its photograph taken and the first to have its spectrum photographed. It was also one of the first stars to have its distance estimated through parallax measurements. Vega has served as the baseline for calibrating the photometric brightness scale, and was one of the stars used to define the mean values for the UBV photometric system.

The Dickweeds first overflew Bishop field A6 and did a missing man formation in honor of C.O. Vega. His wife, callsign DRN911, rode as observer in the plane that performed the climb. Two excellent Bishop fighter squadrons waited on the ground and departed after the bombers overflew.

Next stop was A4, where any interested Bishops could depart and climb up to join the formation.

The Dickweed formation and accompanying Bishops flew north through the mountain passes and circled a Knight airfield. During this time several Knight planes joined the flight along with a few Rook planes as well.
(Image removed from quote.)

It was important to avoid collisions in the formation with opposing team aircraft since these collisions sent some aircraft spinning to the ground. Nonetheless, most pilots fared quite well.

The temptation to thread one's fighter through a formation of tightly-flown bombers was too great for many of the fighter pilots.

The Vega memorial flight proceeded back through the mountain pass at 12,000 feet, circled by Rook field A88 and then returned to Bishop territory, all the time leading a sizeable number of Bishops, Rooks, and Knights. Only two dimwits shot down a substantial number of participants. The rest of the Aces High community "got it". May the dimwits have the wheels of their own funeral processions stolen when their time comes some day, as it surely will.

Upon landing back at the Bishop field, the place looked like England during the war! P-51s, Spitfires, and P-47s lined the runway. Tanks fired salutes. A brave German Arado jet buzzed the field and drew fire from the gunners. The 91st Bomber Squadron parked professionally on the hardstand by the hangars. X.O. Thunder chose to park the Dickweed B-17s along the runway as well.

All in all, we think that Vega would be please with this sendoff that the Aces High community provided. Your response was overwhelming. For over an hour and a half the salutes and words of respect filled the text buffers. A big salute to all of you who participated!

PapaFox,

That was a damn good write up you did of Vega's Memorial Flight. I was proud and honored to have flown and knew Vega. The 91st Bomb Group(H) was proud and honored to fly this Memorial Flight for him at the Dickweed Heavy Bomber Group's side. He will be honored and respected by many in Aces High for years to come.

:salute Vega. We all miss you buddy  :salute

So many planes shot down. So many lives taken. So many bombs dropped. All in a days work :salute

Thanks to everyone in Aces High II that participated respectfully in the Memorial Flight Tuesday Night. Thanks also for all of you who were not able to make it but have expressed yourselves in this forum thread. I have had the privilege of flying online with Vega as a Dickweed for 13 years. I flew with him prior to that in 305th Heavy bomber Group in War Birds. I have thousands of photographs and screenshots of Vega that I could share. I am including just a few here that bring back found memories of my friend and C.O.

Baumer and all, thanks for photos. Bandit, thanks for the nice words. I also appreciate Thunder showing the non-virtual Vega and doing a fine job of organizing the memorial flight.

Here is a photo I just pulled off the film recorder from the landing field. We had fighters lining one end of the runway, Dickweed bombers lining another portion of runway, and the 91st on the ramp. I caught the Rook Arado doing a flyby with both engines smoking. Vega was quite fond of the Arado and JK of the Rooks deserves a thumbs up for adding this touch to the memorial flight. The airport was a beehive of activity. The image is quite a bit larger than it appears on the forum. Feel free to download and view in full size.
Salute!
