Just as a result of an abstract vox conversation tonight and a takeoff from a moving carrier (where I left my wheels down DOH!)

When there are such a large number of questions and threads regarding score hoarding/i'm not a score potato/ you're a score potato/only idiots care about scores etc etc.

Why is it that people don't deliberately snap off their undercarriage on take off, apparently nobody every uses the re-arm pads, it's easy enough to belly land and get your name in lights (which apparently nobody wants to do either.

But just think of all the weight you're saving, undercarriage has got to total a couple of hundred kilograms.

Are the aircraft in AH modelled for the loss of weight relating to loss of parts?

If so will you from now on be able to spot the armchair ace who is about to pwn yr donut by his missing castors

Last time I tried this on the A6M I didn't see a weight change happen but if we do can we also see an increased drag amount due to losing the wheel fairings on the undercarriage?

I've tried this before in the 38...no weight change.

No, because you'd have perked high strength undercarriage doors that you'd fit before ripping your wheels off

What about all the additional drag weight that the debris hanging out of the bottom of your plane creates?  That can't be good for aerodynamics...

A few people in the air races snapped their gears off.  It definately helped with the camel race as they got rid of the parasite drag from the fixed gears.  Retractable gear, doubt it'd do much.

EDIT:  Maybe the advantage was to get through the hangars better as they had a smaller plane at that point.  Dunno.

If you snap your gear off you should be loosing oil etc...

Nope.  I snapped the gear off a Stuka one night and it made absolutely NO difference in speed, climb rate or any other measurable performance statistic.  I actually posted here about it because I expected flight performance to improve.
