This B-17 was recently salvaged from a New Guinea swamp.  She went down after a raid on Rabaul on Feb 23rd, 1942.  This is truely a great day for us classic bird lovers to have this aircraft back home where it can begin to be restored, it's one of only four B-17Es known.  Other than this individual B-17's notable participation in one of the first long-range attacks on Japan after Pearl Harbor, it's also one of the most notable B-17s in U.S. history as being one of the infamous B-17s that made up the flight from California to Pearl Harbor, scheduled to arive in the early hours of Dec 7th, 1941 and that arived at their destination mid-attack.  Of which the first wave of attacking Japanese aircraft detected on radar were mistaken for being this scheduled flight of friendly B-17s.

Found a better news story covering today's events (big surprise, LA Times is going down the crapper) and updated the post with it.

Really cool
