I need some fatherly advice. Is it woth upgrading my PIII600 to a PIII800 Coppermine tho still only at 100Mhz FSB. Will I notice any difference. I actually don't think my Mobo supports low enough voltages, but have heard that this doesn't mean it won't run. I just means it won't last as long. PIII800s are much cheaper now.

System

PIII600, 256MB Ram, Chaintech 6BTM 440BX Board, Geforce2 GTS 32MB.

I've ran my 800EB at 600, and the FR difference is minimal at best in AH. If you want noticeable difference in FR, double the megahertz of the processor.

If this is mobo you're using now you better start saving money for upgrade.
Athlons/Durons CPUs and mobos are quite cheap these days thought you might need to buy new 300-350w power supply if your old is 230-250w like my old P3 system had.

Depend on p3 800 price

I just got P3 800 copermine and i had 500 no copermine... i getting about +20-40% framerate depend on situation..

my graphics card is Hercules propet 4500-kyro2

Going from 600 to 800 P3 with the same video card (unless you had a GF2 Ultra or GF 3) won't probably make much difference.

Also be careful when you hear "double the megahertz" as the performance per clock between P3s, P4s, and Athlons are vastly different. A P3 or Athlon at the same clock speed as a P4 is MUCH MUCH faster. The Megahertz clock speed is only important when comparing processors of the same type.

I would recomend saving your money and buy new mobo and cpu all together.

The amd procs are great power and value if you can keep them cool enough

Thanks everybody.

I suspected it wasn't worth it and would be better with a mobo/athlon upgrade. It's just a question of when. I must say all current games including AH run fine on present setup.

As a PS, can anyone notice any difference between 16bit and 32bit colour or am I going blind! I can't

The main diff between 16 bit and 32 bit colors can be seen on the horizon... especially at sunrise and sunset. At least that's where its most noticeable for me.

As for the processor upgrade... I don't really have any advice. Just know that if you do upgrade to an athlon setup, you will most likely need a new case or power supply.

I am currently looking at the case-mb-cpu situation myself. The prices right now are pretty tasty. I'm just trying to decide on the right mb for the right price. Pretty sure it is going to be an XP 1500 processor, though.

Well I just spent $400 on the following including shipping from http://www.UnitedMicro.com:
AMD 1.4GHz
Volcano 6CU+ Heatsink/fan combo
512MB PC2100 Infineon DDR RAM
ASUS A7V266 6xPCI slots 1xAGP4x slot

Then when I put it all in my power supply died when I cut it off after formatting drive to get ready for installing new stuff. That was $45 after tax for a new POWMAX 300W dual fan power supply. I used my existing Enlight Mid Tower ATX case and same video, sound, network and all drives.

So for around $450 and 3 hours one afternoon I was up and running. Right now if you go with the mobo combo using the AMD1600+ (1.4GHZ) and the same setup as me without shipping it is $403 by the quote on their website. I ordered it on a Thursday and the following Friday I received it already tested and memory installed ready for me to attach the HS Fan and power it up.
