Great book, very interesting take on how the Great Depression forged the Americans who went to war, the author does a great job of describing how he feels about that. Very vivid description of the attack on Pearl, interesting things as well about life aboard the ship prior to that, and how it almost wasn't even in Pearl, and ended up being there by accident. The author was a true hero, incredible how he and a few others survived thanks to another sailor standing up to an officer, and even after the terrible burns and wounds, he still went back in 44 to serve on a destroyer.
Important piece of American history told by a man who describes himself as just a regular American, like all his shipmates.
