Jerky since last patch(es)
« on: August 02, 2010, 10:26:57 AM »
I'm having an issue with 'jerkyness' since the last patch.

Watching the frame rates, I maintain a consistent 59-60 FPS all the time; however, when pulling the trigger and performing maneuvers, the video seems to 'jerk' almost as if it's dropping some frames to keep up.  It's helped a little by dropping 'aircraft/vehicle effects'... but it is still very noticeable whenever the cockpit (pilots head) is moving or 'shaking' in any way.

Any help would be appreciated!

DXDIAG output in next message, with no issues up to August 18th. (been out for the last two weeks, and issue showed up when I got back and installed the new AH patch(es).  Been flying for the last 3 days with the issue.

Regards,

Pandemonium

I've been seeing the same thing since patch 3.  While the frame rate as displayed on the counter appears rock solid at 59. as you pan the view through a busy area, the screen stutters/judders as though FR has dropped.

When that happens, watch the object count, if you see numbers flashing then returning to zero those are textures/objects being rendered. That can cause some stuttering effect.

Your paging file is too big, I hope that's not off a fresh boot:

Page File: 2144MB used

Unless that's a laptop, from a fresh boot your paging file should be under 800MB with anti-virus turned off.

And a large portion of your video memory is actually system memory which is typically slower than dedicated video memory, that's a video chip you're using isn't it?

If you're using shadows, turn them off. Might also try backing off on the texture size in the main video settings, if you're using 512 or higher. Could even try turning off other plane skins.

This is a desktop machine, runs great with just about everything, and has been great up until these last set of patch(es).

- I'm running windows 7 HP 64-bit with 4 GB of memory
- I've got an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT over HDMI with 256MB of onboard memory... why does DXDIAG show 1407 MB of shared memory?  And can I make sure Aces or whatever isn't using shared memory?
- I do see the object count, but ONLY when I first login for a split second, or alt-tab out and alt-tab back in.
- Page File:  I have disabled my paging file, because 4GB of memory is enough to never need one (at least without running multiple instances of photoshop!).  I'm concerned why it would show a paging file, when I just checked and Virtual Memory -> Total paging file size for all drives: 0MB.

That is odd. I thought the XT models were onboard video chips. If it is, that would be the reason it's showing the extra memory. I'm running Win7 64bit with 4GB of RAM too, but my paging file is ~726 or so from a fresh boot and I'm not having any issues thus far.

Pand, I think you're confusing Page File and Virtual Memory.  Page file is how much memory is being used at the moment you opened DxDiag.  If you were to open AH right after closing DxDiag you'd be trying to run AH with 1/2 your RAM dedicated to something besides AH (bad).  You should be able to have that cut down below 1GB on idle.  I think mine runs 800MB with Windows 7 idle and I run a lot on idle (I don't head my own warnings sometimes).
