Intel hopes new chipset will change PC industry

Looks like Intel is putting out a new chip that will merge a microprocessor and graphics processor onto a single silicon chip.  They are targeting low end systems market, so I wouldn't expect to use this for PC games.  However this might spell bad news for the high end market if they start taking market share from Nivida and ATI on low end systems.

Intel already owns 63% of the video graphics market.  The rest is split between ATI and NVidia.  Intel has been shipping CPU's with built-in video chips for several months now.  The i5-600 series CPU's has a graphics chip in it.

Yeah, Intel has been targeting graphics for years and years now.  They do fine with low end graphics for servers that only need to be able to show a GUI (if that) and users that don't need any 3d capability.  But they have never had any success with even a mid-range offering.

Nevertheless, because they are Intel, every year the so-called-experts predict the end of ATI and Nvidia because "Intel will take over graphics", (which I think they do only to get all the gamers in an uproar by the way) and every year it doesn't happen.  Every time Intel tries to make even a mid-range video card, its terrible and they usually don't even bother to release it.

It does keep ATI and Nvidia pushing forwards though.  ATI sold itself to AMD partly as a hedge against this very thing.

There are several good articles about Sand Bridge at http://www.anandtech.com/

It all sounds pretty impressive so far.

The only way this is going to hurt Nvidia is by taking the marketshare of the motherboards that use integrated Nvidia graphics, and possibly HTPCs that use the ION graphics.

If the performance of this setup is not efficient with 3d graphics (doubtful) then this will do nothing but INCREASE sales of Nvidia/ATI products.

The only chance it has of taking the marketshare away from someone else is if it is able to produce 1080p graphics without so much a stutter, and even that is a relatively small market in the first place.

As for netbooks and power-sipping laptops.. those likely already have intel graphics chips anyway.

This was my first thought.

Looks like they are just going to spend some advertising budget on promoting it finally.

This is going to be a nightmare for me.

Caller: I got the latest, greatest computer evar!
Me: What video card does it have?
Caller: Built right into the CPU so it is super fast!
Me: Uh, no, sorry, it is not very fast at all.
Caller:  You do not know what you are talking about! Intel says it is the bestest there is!
Me: Allow me this analogy.  What you have is a Buggati Veyron wearing F78 series bias ply tires.  The car is capable of 267MPH, but the tires will hold it back.
Caller: What the heck does some Italian pasta dish have to do with computers?  And why would you put tires on it?
Me: <sigh>

Who's kissing his arse?   We don't CARE about his arse.   But some of us would kill to get behind the wheel of a Bugatti Veyron.
