please help me.... bad frame rates skip!!!
« on: September 04, 2001, 01:23:00 AM »
It all started after I got Dx Beta 12..
I have average 30-40 FR about all the time...
What I have is that screen freezes every .5 sec for .3- .5 sec about all the time.
Sometimes I am lucky and it doesnt happened but most of the time AH is unplayeble to me. This happenes only in AH... other sims I have runs smooth as usiall.
Thinking that its related to AH DX beta 12 i have reinstall DirectX 8.0 and AH itself. Also downgraded detonator to 7.5.8 Frame rates improved but problem was still with me. So i decided to format HD. All went cool for 3-4 hours and this sick screen freez is again with me.

I have tried switching to different modes in AH... even tried 640x460 (yuukk) but now luck. Sometimes if i switch to 800x600x16 it will let me play 5-10 minutes than again!!!
Changed and played with FR settings - unlimited, 45,60... nothing helps.

Please any ideas?

My system specs:
Windows 98SE
P III -500 MGz
256 MB ram
GeForce 2 MX
DirectX 8
Saitek x36 combo

Heya Ghosty...have you tried running the normal AH executable and not the beta one?  I think they're still separate, so running one should have completely different results from running the other.  I normal one is just "...\HTC\Aces High\aceshigh.exe".

I'm running the beta with DirectX 8.0a and Detonator driver version 12.9 with my GeForce 3 without any problems.

Hope some of that helps!  Looking forward to running away from you soon.   :)

well SOB i hope I could put a smiley. but.... As i said - I formated HD and reinstall windows from scratch. Then install AH and didnt touch AH DX beta 12. So I have only AH 1.7 and thats all, not counting custom sounds.

Doubt I will come into MA with all screen freezes. Last time i was there got killed 3 times in less than 30 minutes - all with my advantage in E   :(

And you didn't change anything about your hardware or software aside from installing Beta 12?  Think man, there's gotta be something else...things rarely just stop working for no good reason!  If all else fails, wait another 4 hours and give HTC a nice morning tech support call  :)  Good luck!

I see "sometimes its ok"  makes me think that something is going on in the background.

You don't mention sound card?

just a suggestion: run AH at the same resolution and colour depth as your desktop.

Desctop at the same depth and resolution as AH: 1024x768x16bit....
Sound board: Some generic Yamaxa XG blah blah... cheap and i hear some sounds sometimes...

Also I do recall installing Geforce 2 MX over my TNT 2 recently... however at time of change all was ok... at least I think....

If nothing wont help i would be forced  to change oback to TNT 2 again....

Dmitry,

Do you have any virus software runing on your system. I found that McAfee on mine would screw up AH even if the McAfee was turned off. Only solution was to make sure McAfee didn't start on boot up. I run it to surf, then reboot without it to play AH.

Mav I closed all running appz - all through Ctrl-Alt-del.... no programms were running... none, exept to run windows tho.... I am not surfing web on this machine, and specially now its all clean out and like a brand new   :( with old CPU....

Got to be Geforce 2 and/or Saitek.... my best guess... how to find out wich one????

EDIT: This problem is only with Aces High... for instance Il-2 demo works just fine... so weird... and the most weird is that there are time when I dont have frame freezes at all... most time i do however  :(
      :o

Remove any and all video card drivers!! and all references in the registry.  You may have some old remnants in there if you installed the GF2 over the TNT since u reformatted last.

Thank you all and sorry for wasting your time...
It is clear to me now what a piece of ____ windows 98 is.... and how dumb really I am.

What I found out was that IRQ 11 was used naturally by Geforce and somehow Win decided to share it also with my sound card... what kills me and maybe in some way rebilitates is that when I formated HD and install windows I have done all that with all cards removed - exept for Geforce. After installing Detonator drivers for Geforce I pluged in my sound card and run drivers for it. I have not expected to have any IRQ problems this way - I have never had.... (maybe back to Windows 95 when I was trying to run some old DOS based games with sound)... I havent botherd to check for IRQ due to correct install procceeder.

Another case shows how wrong I can be... and blind...

Like Joe Peshi said: - They %$#$ you and then they find a way to &%$# you some more"

How true...

Again thank you all for trying to help me, you have kept my confidience on high level  :)

Dmitry,

Closing the apps with the Ctr alt del does NOT stop them all!!!! Even though I shut McAfee down with that method it still remained active. I learned this with my problem which sounds just like yours. I had to edit, using msconfig, the startup files to keep McAfee from loading at bootup to solve my problem. Try that and see if it makes a change in your problem. It TOTALLY fixed mine. I just load McAfee when I want to surf or use the browser now. If I decide to play AH later I reboot and McAfee isn't loaded at all.

I was having bad skipping problems last week... I found that Gator had reinstalled itself somehow; I removed it, and now it's back to normal.

May or may not be your problem, but check it out.

Good luck.

This system has only AH installed, also Network card, Video and sound cards. Stick is Saytek x36.

When I post that my problem solved with reinstall i was wrong. The proble was with me and just didnt show at first 1 minute i have tested AH.

Spending a few more hours I finally found what was the reason for glitches - my new Geforce 2 MX. I have removed it and reinstall TNT 2.... sucks - 20-25 FR but at least playeble....

If you can tell me and help me tune and tweek my Geforce 2 MX to play with AH... would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks in advance
