1973    Egypt and Syria attacked Israel during the Yom Kippur holiday.

1942 - Joseph Stalin sent a telegram to the German/Soviet front at Stalingrad. The message was "That part of Stalingrad which has been captured must be liberated."

1955 - The play "The Diary of Anne Frank" opened at the Cort Theatre in New York.

1949    American-born Iva Toguri D'Aquino, convicted as Japanese wartime broadcaster Tokyo Rose, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

1884    The Naval War College was established in Newport, R.I.

1864 - Confederate General John Bell Hood attacked Union General William T. Sherman's supply line at Allatoona Pass, Georgia.
