Bill Halsey and Pete Mitscher had planned long and carefully for October 12. On that day they both intended to disprove forever the military theory that sea-based air power must operate outside of the reach of land-based air, limiting itself to attacks on relatively isolated land targets and opposing surface forces.

Borrowed from the book, "The Big E".

Authored by Cmndr. Edward P. Stafford (USN)

I recommend you read it.

Epic Mosquito sortie by two Mosquitos of 418 Squadron in 1944. Hunsdon - St. Dizier - Budojovice / Nemecky Brod - Iesi - Husndon.

Eighteen enemy aircraft destroyed or damaged on the ground.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB
