My KT7 is laughing at me
« on: February 24, 2001, 08:25:00 AM »
It is laughing at my every failed attempt to install Windows 2000 on it.    I got a new box set up and now I'm trying to install Win2k.  It goes fine through the text mode formatting, then into GUI part up to where it starts setting up Start Menu and building registry.  Then it BSODs.

Is there some trick to getting this thing to install?  Also, whenever it BSODs or I change something in the BIOS, the computer will not reboot, it looks like it starts to reboot but the monitor remains "asleep" and I hear no beep from the motherboard and no other activity from inside the box.  Cold booting won't work after this either.  I can only get it to start again by flipping the rocker switch off on the P/S for a few seconds then on again.  What the hell??

I thought I might need to use a driver for the on-board ATA-66, y'know when Win2k setup asks you at the very beginning if you want to use a third party disk driver?  But I could not find anything for my motherboard's ATA-66 chip.  There is a driver that came on my mobo's CD-ROM but it is for the KT7-RAID version, and I just have the plain KT7 sans RAID.

Here's what I got:

Abit KT7 (non-raid version)
Duron 700
256MB PC-133
IBM 40GB
Elsa Erazor TNT2
300W P/S

No cards are installed except the AGP video card.

Just checked CPU temperature... running 36°C.  This should be within normal limits, right?

The BSOD reads PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, which Microsoft says is due to bad RAM.

CPU Temperature is great Sancho.
I am running my 700duron at 1ghz and it runs at 50 (celcious) wich is fine, the tolerance for the athlon core is 70 celcious.

Which IDE controller is your hard drive plugged into?

If it's plugged into the UDMA 66/100 controller, it WILL NOT work until you have the proper driver installed, and will BSOD exactly like that.

Assuming you don't have bad RAM, you just need to put the driver in during the setup process.  Use the one for the KT7-RAID anyway, it might do it.  They are not much different.

You can find all the answers here:  http://www.icrontic.com/faqs/kt7faq/kt7faq.htm

You might want to try the Printer version and print it out at work, that's what I did.

The HD is plugged into the UDMA 66 controller (no 100 on this KT7).  The manual said not to use the driver unless on the RAID version, which I don't have.

I replaced the DIMM with some memory from another box and it stopped BSODing, but now it only gets to the "registering components" (step two in a list after "setting up start menu") and then it just reboots the computer without any error message.  When it reboots, it starts setup all over again.

Oh well, off to peruse the FAQ.  Thanks for the link.

You need to install W2k basic setup with an ide33 system.. Then after you installed the OS install drivers for UDMA66, turn off computer, install dma/66 cable back and it will reckognize your devices correctly..

Get the latest patches for w2k and sp1 ready before install and do it in that order.
