I am a writer in my spare time when I am not blasting the dreaded hun. So I needed a new project. I stumbled across that story about the HTC Staff written by a community member in General discussion. He used to write a comedy sketch every week about HTC and its staff. Mussie was the guy.
And that gave me an idea..... (please note, all of this is in good humour and not intended to insult, but to laugh at how much of a bunch of morons we are when we fly our cartoon planes)
The AVA Chronicles – Episode one – A corner of a foreign field that is forever AVA
RL Date: 3rd of February 2010 – Local Date – September 1940 – About lunch time on a Saturday
In the world of Aces High there are few places with such a serene atmosphere as Axis Vs Allies. It had been a long rotation from the Main Arenas to the AVA front of the war. An area of battle designed to recreate the days of old, to inspire chivalry and foster skill in all aircraft of war.
This week was the Battle of Britain set up, it was a pleasant day. The sun shone through light white clouds and bathed the digital Kent country side in a warm glow. It was a long flight from the Solomon Islands, but the AVA crews were not deterred.
But to say they were active would be a tad generous. At Hawkinge airfield, (A15) all was tranquil. No activity was to be seen or heard. There was however evidence to confirm the presence of the pilots.
In the centre of the field a C-47 with an M3 parked right beside stood with its cargo doors open. Four or five boxes lay on the ground, the two largest boxes however looked as if they had been torn apart with crowbars by desperate marauders. One of the boxes was a large wooden crate, its planks and splinters littered the surrounding turf. The other was a large, metal, insulated case that stood several feet high and wide, which had been opened with a speed and vigor unimaginable. The wooden box, imprinted with the shipping and cargo black ink stamp, read: Camp chairs with cup holders. While the large metal case read: Beer and Refreshments.
Looking around the airfield one would have seen no signs of life, but once someone looked in the shadow of the “Indestructible hanger” a line of camp chairs with rather large occupants become visible.
“God that was a bumpy ride from the canal to here, do you reckon Skagneti was flying?” came an Australian voice from one of the chairs. “Either him or Jaeger, not too sure though” a southern accent replied, “well I don’t think LTCAP will be happy about flossy” said the Australian again “she is not up to much lately” “what is the matter with flossy?” “She seems tired all the time, and her fleece is always knotted” “hell ya’ll know more about that than me, I don’t even know what I… am supposed to be doing, let alone what the boss IS doing”.
Flossy, was the AVA mascot. A beautiful welsh bred sheep, but at that time she was tired and lay very worn out outside the CO’s office. CAP the CO was very fond of flossy and always described her fleece as “shaggy”, he spent a lot of quality time with the animal and the pair were inseparable even when on bomber sorties, unless CAP was going fly fighters, flossy was always near. She raised her head slightly as she heard a noise, the unmistakable purr of a Merlin, approaching the field.
“Who is that?” said the southern voice “I don’t know, cannot tell” the aircraft was coming closer and they saw it was a Hurricane; it rose and fell in swoops, as if the engines thrust was flying the plane and not the pilot. The engine would conk out as it pushed over and then fire again when it swooped. “Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrp…….. Brrrrrrrrrrp…… brrrrrrrrrp” was the noise it made as it came towards the ground. “Its Oldman, he has fallen asleep at the controls… again” said the Aussie, suddenly the aircraft plowed into the ground and slowed to a stop in the dirt. “Yep that’s Oldman alright, good eye Pacman” “thanks Tex”, a loud swear word echoed through the calm and a frantic scrambling figure arose from the Hurricane now scattered across the field but largely intact. “He just woke up now? Dang he must be getting on in years” said Skagneti who had woken up at the sound of the incoming plane.
Suddenly, a loud “baaaaaaaaaaaaa” rang out near the CO’s office just next to the Indestructible. The pilots in the camp chairs looked over to see flossy terrified and cowering before a figure who had just left the office and was now advancing to embrace her.
“Look out guys” Pacman said “the boss just woke up”
