Flaps don't increase climb rate because they add drag. Flaps can increase your angle of climb but not your rate of climb.

Flaps help generate more lift at slower speeds, but also increase drag

in air combat, you want to learn to use your flaps when needed up to the point where the Drag becomes over bearing of the lift, and drains your energy...... in theory that is, when in a slow maneuvering dogfight....... you do not want to be using flaps where the drag is more than the lift you could possibly obtain.....

hope this helps

Most newbs in the hog have a tendency to over use their flaps imo. They are large and they do generate a lot of lift, but they will also suck the E right out of you. The key to being successful in the hog is to use your E wisely. It takes a long time to build it up and you can dump it oh so quick. Once you dump your E you better have the kill shot, because chances are your opponent can recover his E faster than you can.
One other thing about flap usage in the hog (and this is just my personal belief) if you drop a notch of flaps and the nose rears up you shouldn't be dropping the flaps. A slight rise of the nose isn't bad but when it flares up you are draining E.

One other thing I see neophytes to the hog do is drop the landing gear in a fight to slow down quickly. Don't, it will get you killed far more than it will get you the kill. Dropping the gear works great for dive bombing, and for slowing down to land, but it's a real bad idea in a fight.
