Input For Thursday Film Contest - AvA Arena
« on: March 05, 2011, 06:14:45 PM »
First of all thanks for all of the great films you all have produced that inspired this event idea.  :salute

What do you think is a reasonable deadline for film submissions, 2 weeks?

Would making it a youtube film contest, throw a wrench in the works?  (Looking for an alternative to watch / judge multiple submissions without having to dl all.)  <- Help.

I will post the details of the event later, but how many of you would be available (03/10/11 ~ 8:30 pm EST) and interested in a film contest, with the winner having the front page AvA website spot?  http://avaarena.webs.com/

Can anyone help me contact the Musketeers?  This film, http://www.musketeers.org/?p=167 although I would say that more than 2 weeks went into it, shows almost the exact sort of frame that is depicted in the event.  I recognize FLS as a trainer, and Rapier was listed as CO from that web page.  Some very polished films on that site. :aok

Yes, the film is to be a depiction of a particular event that is due to run only on this Thursday @ 8:30 pm EST.

Other film can be used to fill in as long as the plane set is followed.  My feeling is that you can put anything, film or sound wise into the completed film as long as it shows no enemy icons, was filmed in the AvA and tells a story inspired from the event's theme.

I am waiting for approval on the details, should have it laid out for you here tomorrow.

Always glad to see film of the AvA.  The website frequently posts films, the contest winner will secure the Front page film slot.

Chilli, I'm sure we could host wmv's on Flowplayer, but it would sure simplify things if it were You Tube vids, and be better quality.

This one on the old 358th is hosted on site http://358daybreakers.webs.com/

The same one on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCQjlLdZmyM

I don't know how many AvA players are film makers and we might not get many films submitted, but I'd like to see folks's creativity in the production rather than just raw films.

I'd say at least one week to submit after the event.

Yes, but this one night event will be a Luftwaffe counter attack against Allied shipping.

2 weeks? A month is pushing it for repeated submissions. I tried to get a 30 second film club going a while back. First one or two had much more submissions than the following ones. It's much easier for a 1-time thing, than it is for a repeating cycle. For a cycle/regular schedule you'll realistically need more time.

Thanks for the kinds words, Chilli.  :)

I would love to be able to participate too; I like where you're going with the concept.  However, I'm usually working until around 6:30 pm Pac time and usually don't get home until 7:15 or so.  So, personally I'll have to miss this event.  BTW, yep you're right in that it'd take more than just a few days work to get a good machinima put together like One Summer's Day.  Too many steps involved to do it justice if you rush it.

May I suggest an idea that will also give those that can't play in the event a chance at the movie contest part of it?  It might work this way:

1) Hold the event and have interested participants film their sorties.
2) Install a process for their submission/review of the best raw AH film from the event.
3) Choose the best film(s) and make those select film(s) the starter pack that EVERY film contestant will use.
4) All the contestant entries start from the same baseline raw film starter pack, and the contestants' own creativity will be what determines the winning "movie".
5) Allow at least 1 month for final submissions of the machinimas.  It's a very time-consuming effort and people with many time constraints won't be able to do it if time is too short.
6) Presumably, you've already figured out how winners will be reviewed/determined.

Anyway, just a suggestion since I won't be able to be in your event.  Either way, I'm glad you liked my films and really wish you guys good luck with this event; I hope you gets some good movies out of it.

Thanks and FWIW,  :salute

Thanks,
I am hoping that we get a decent amount of films posted.  Reality might kick in though, so I am asking for some film community support if you are available.  Then, as Krusty has pointed out it might be run as sort of a club type thing for future events.

Cool, Wraith posted in the middle of my answering.

Wraith, I thoroughly enjoyed your film and was blown away that it was just the sort of thing that I was about to do, ie story telling contest around a Ju88 torpedo raid.  I will take your ideas to the group and let you know how that works out.  :pray

Also, even though the event's orders will begin around 5:30 PM EST, The arena will continue with the setup hopefully until the morning hours.  The only question will then be if there will be any targets left for you late arrivals.  :pray  So, please do make it a point to drop in and enjoy yourself if nothing else.  Shifty, has given us a wonderful setup to work around featuring the 8th USAAF, the 20th and a host of historical combatants.  http://avaarena.webs.com/

Just wanted to make it clear that contest is for the best film that tells the story of the frame.  The content is going to be left up to the creativity of the filmaker.

This is how I see the criteria for judging the films:

Quote
This is how I intend to look at each film.

Content related to the event.

Content quality, film most likely to evoke a positive interest in the AvA.

Contents ability to get into the details of telling a story.

Basically the same for the screenshots. (not mentioned here but a fall back, in case of no films)

The Baedeker Raids

Hitler demanded reprisals for the more than 250 tons of incendiaries dropped on the Baltic seaport of Lubeck.  The Luftwaffe's attempts to follow the Fuhrer's wishes would become know as Baedeker raids.

*Thursday night's event, is a fictional mission that is loosely based on units that served in this area.

While on temporary detachment to the Low Countries KG30 was the sole Ju88 Kampfgeschwader to remain in action against the British Isles.  Its two Gruppen were supported by 3 of the ex-coastal units Kampfgruppen 106 506 and 606.  Combined with the Ju88 torpedo- bombers of II. and III. / KG26 (brought up from their bases in southern France), they set out to disrupt the Allied shipping amassing in the Channel.  Their target was to be all ships in harbours like Portland harbour, but especially the Allies submarines.

Will the lessons learned at Pearl Harbor aide the Allies in their defenses, or are will they be doomed to repeat the tragedies on another front?  Come join in the AvA arena on Thursday March 10, 2011 recieve orders @ 8:30 pm EST and be sure to film every minute of it.  A contest will be held for the best edited film of the event.

  • There will be a You tube video contest. The best video of the nights action will be posted on the AvA website.
  • Greater than 50% percent of these ships destroyed will be an Axis victory, less will be an Allied Victory
  • There are 5 ships at each port 1 carrier 2 submarines 1 cruiser 1 destroyer
  • Targets are the ships at P-105, P-106, P-107 and P-108, and P-109
  • Axis objective: Torpedo as many ships as possible.
  • Allied objective: Defend ports.
