easter egg for WW1 arena
« on: April 17, 2011, 04:59:27 PM »
Some of you will recall the sheep AH used to have scattered over maps....

For the WW1 arena I think it would be cool to, instead of sheep, model static little infantry men in trenches... lots and lots of them, thousands upon thousands...

and if someone strafes one that has been coded as cpl. hitler (randomly jumps around) it shuts down the WW2 arenas.

Depends on whether or not you think WWII was caused by the specific pathos of Hitler, or was an inevitable result of the outcome of WWI...

I liked how the Nazi's still existed without Hitler in L. Neil Smith's "Roswell, Texas", but they wore lots of pink. Or sometimes leather. Must have had something to do with Hitler not being there to purge Roehmer. But I digress...

Or mass cancellations...

I think a few new planes would spike WWI numbers enough.

Spikes as in a very temporary rise from people dropping in to check it out and then heading back to the MAs.  Same holds true with adding more planes, any rise in numbers will be short lived.  Without any underlying objectives, very few have any interest in the WWI arena.  It is a dog-fighting arena, plain and simple.  For those who fly in it, many are perfectly happy with it remaining a dog-fighting arena.  Troops and trenches, are simply gimmicks to add eye candy.  Cool?  Sure.  A tool to populate WWI? Nope.

Would be cool if it was like the eye candy in RoF when you fly over No Man's Land and see the bursts from the artillery barrages hitting the trenches.

Many as in 4?   ;)

But really, your post is spot on.

I would love to see some new planes added, but it would not fix the root cause of the arena's problem by itself.

There would be some initial interest to try them out, then the players would realize "Oh, it is actually still the same borinng, stale, one diminsional, pointless, one meaningless furball arena that it always has been."  and they'd head back to the strat enabled war in the WWII MA.

And it has little to do with it being WWI.  If they burdened their premier WWII arena with the same unfortunate design, they would be put out of business within a year.  If the more popular WWII MA couldn't survive that design mistake, I don't know how its reasonable to expect the less popular WWI genre to be able to support it.
