Film Viewer: Max supported resolution?
« on: April 21, 2011, 05:43:34 AM »
Before I get into the problem here's the guts:

Running Dell Dimension 8200 with a 2 GigHz P-IV Chip
1 Gig of RD RAM (PC800)on a PC400 bus
ATI 4600 vid card (1 Gig ram onboard) Set to 1920x1080 for 37" Viewsonic LCD
Windows XP 32bit

So yes, It's an "OLDER SYSTEM" that is just above Min.Spec for the game, even though there is SOME loading lag, it still runs the game pretty smooth around 25-30 FPS.

Now, the rub:

I have quite a few older AH films some of them fairly large (16megs or so) recorded 2004/5 using 1024x768 resolution and are working just fine in the viewer (and yes I still have the older AH II version installed). And yes they work at the current display resolution below.

I recorded a couple of films using 1920x1080 resolution (1 is fairly small the other quite large 15megs) since that is the recomended resolution for my 37" LCD and Vid Card combination.

BUT, I can't get either of those two new films to open in the viewer. I've tried opening the viewer first then loading the films and clicking the films and let them open the viewer (both ways crash the viewer immediately).

Now the questions:

Is the recorded resolution (1920x1080) just too much info for the viewer to handle, considering the system it's running on?

Or is having the older AH version installed corrupting the new version films?

Or is it a combination of both?

You cannot mix and match versions of Aces High and the film viewer, or the films (for the most part).  Older films will not play on the latest version of Aces High, and films recorded using the latest version will not play on an older version.

Yeah, I get that. That's why I keep the old version installed, so I don't "lose" my old films because they call up objects from that version in order for them to work.

But doesn't the films themselves "target" the version (or tell the viewer to call up the correct version) in which they were created, to call up the correct objects?

No, not at all.

No, not at all.

:bhead lol, figured the old stuff might be corrupting the new films/viewer  :bhead

Guess I'll have to wait till I get my new system built, so I can keep the two versions separated on different systems!

That said, so recording at MAX resolution (1920x1080, for the system I use now) shouldn't be a problem for the viewer to run it, right?

The film viewer does not care about the resolution used in the recording as there is no resolution involved in the film recordings.

:bhead Right, because the viewer actually "loads up" the game environtment in a 3D view and places the recorded objects in that environment for the play back!
