Dell XPS 9100
« on: May 12, 2011, 02:10:24 PM »
Been having trouble with the ATI Catalyst Control Center on my computer lately.

And by trouble, I mean it doesn't open.

Started having trouble with it after a Windows update that had included something for ATI in it.

Apparently Dell and alot of other people have had ALOT of issues with the CCC.

I had Dell on the phone AND a remote assist for over 2 hours the other day trying to resolve the issues.

They tried uninstalling and re-installing all ATI components on my computer to no avail.

I had tried the same remedies myself and also tried that other control system too.

The other one worked for a day or 2 and it quit opening too.

I've got to give Dell an "A" for effort and customer service, they are sending someone TO my house to replace my 5870 with a new one!!

They will also go through the entire computer and check for AND repair any abnormalities they find.

So, say what you want about Dell, you can't can't deny that they have great customer service!!!

BTW, I had called ATI tech support and they told me that my problem was now Dells problem. The guy wouldn't even talk to me about it.

The reason ATI will not talk to you about it is due to contractual obligations they have with Dell.  Dell does not want anyone talking to their suppliers.  Most of the time it is due to Dell specific changes to the products in an attempt to keep them, somewhat, proprietary.

Its odd that there may be a potential conflict between ATI CCC and Del computers.  My fiance has a Dell/AlienWare that we recently swapped out the Nvidia cards out for a pair of ATI 5870 in Crossfire mode and does not have a problem with CCC or ATI Tray Tools.  From experience with ATI cards, I do know that a defective card can keep CCC from opening or working properly.

Well, he did allow a Windows update to do something ATI related.  In my experience, that will almost always make a mess of the video subsytem.

Boner,

I recently had an issue with the latest W7 update as well. When  playing WoT, if I exited and went back in, it would show up as a never ending black screen. Driver update fixed it, but I thought it was odd. I did not think the update had anything ATI related in it.

Don't EVER let Windows update hardware or drivers or anything related to your hardware.  It never fails to produce problems.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

What bald said.

The list of horror story's of people who "just did a windows update, now X doesn't work" is near endless.

The list of people who had problems because they never did a windows update is almost insignificant.

I didn't. I have it set to not auto update, but once in a while it installs new updates anyway.

Well, the guy who Dell sent to my house to replace my 5870 with a new one just left.

Still no CCC!!!

Dell remote assist couldn't figure it out last week, now a seemingly intelligent tech sitting AT my computer can't figure it out either.

Awesome!!!!
