Possible Ffu4 flap bug.
« on: August 04, 2011, 03:05:16 PM »
I was in a fight last night in my f4u4 when a 190 jumped in a took some shots at me. I had flaps down when he hit me on the right side. After that she was almost impossible to handle. I assume that one flap was damaged (right one) and thats why it wanted to roll me to the left. When looking outside the plane for damage the right flap was gone. Not stuck in the down position, just gone. The left flap was in the up position, which makes me ask if the damage was with flaps down and you can no longer put them down or retract why was the left one not stuck in the down position. Not sure if there is a bug there or not. What say you? :salute

The damage is graphically represented by the missing flap that you do not see. Regarding the flight modeling, the damage is represented by having the flap remain in the position it was when damaged in. So, for control purposes you need to keep the flap in the position it was when the other side's was damaged.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

In other words, lower the other flap back down to even the lift out.

You may notice on the newer aircraft 3D models the flaps remain, but are just "all shot up" and that is the way they are all going to look down the road, but the F4Us are way at the bottom of the "redo" list because they are fairly new and many other craft are still on the old AH1 models.

Eventually it will get sorted.

Ok so the flap missing was to "show damage". Funny thing is that the first thing I tried was to even them out but the left would not come down.

That can happen if this series of events takes place:

- Lower flaps
- Lose 1 flap
- Retract flaps without realizing the problem
- Lose 2nd flap.

Now the first flap is jammed down, say 2 or 3 notches. The second flap is either jammed "up" or at 1-2 notches. You still get a drastic roll to one side.

Had that happen in a P-40E once. Lost 1 flap 2 notches, the other 1 notch. Made for a very slow and manual RTB (you can't engage autopilot like this)

EDIT: Also, if you lose 1 flap at 3 notches, but you only lower the other side 1 notch, you're going to have a major handling issue. If you lose 1 flap at full, you need to bring the other side all the way down. If the flap was working, you may simply not have "matched the other side" properly.
