Academically speaking, the SpitV flown in North Africa wasn't as capable as ours was, nor did it turn as well. It was weighed down and slowed down by giant sand filters on the nose in many cases. The performance was notiably worse off than its cleaner "European" brothers.

didn't the 109's also have filter mods?
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

It was more of a scoop on the Spit Vs. I can see how it would have a big effect on the aerodynamics and performance.

hmm...id say that the 109 would give the spit some trouble with the filter on it. if the spit had a smaller one then id say it would easily out-do the 109

Loss of speed on 109s was marginal because the "cap" on the sand screen opened up once you were off the ground and no longer creating huge dust clouds. The resulting drag would then only be from a slight "bump" as compared to the normal airflow. The spit (as seen) was majorly impacted.

Similar filter, but of smaller size, could also be found on hurricanes, further reducing their performance as well.

The Luftwaffe definitely held the performance advantages in the desert. It was logistics and ground warfare that made them lose the fight, not air power.

As far as sand filters? No loss of speed as far as I know. 1-2 mph or so I think. the 190 air intake is behind the engine cylinders. The bulge left and right over the cowling is a housing to accomodate the air intake pipe snaking around the cylinder heads to get the feed to the supercharger behind them. On the sand filters that I've seen, they are placed where this bulge is on the cowling and take in air externally, filter the sand there, then duct it inside.

Similar to the diagram here, on the upper middle right side:

On the similarly-shaped high-alt ram-air compression supercharger intake used on later models this only slowed the plane down a barely noticable amount.

In short: Fw190s were impacted less than Bf109s were, which weren't impacted all that much to begin with.

Well none of this is modeled in AH really. I'm talking real-world specs. In the real war, the LW had a distinct advantage. In AH terms the allies have more than the real war and are performing nearly par with the LW.
