Hitech, your suggestions worked. However it took me some serious time and effort. Much like most of the joystick problems we had in Warbirds + - 1.00
I manually went into the stick.cfg file and played with the deadband, dampeners and settings. Finally I got it all to work. Then I had to battle the dreaded "your moving you stick too fast" error which was solved by increasing the dampener settings.
The autopilot does unlock with slight back-pressure and stickboard. Yaw is still useless. I still find some of the auto characteristics odd, but if you have them designed to eliminate certain shortcuts so be it.
As Mox mentioned, maybe you want to include some of these problems in an AH FAQ. I would gladly summarize the stick.cfg file for those who need it.
