Playing for an hour straight with headphones on and no-one in the house and all the sounds turned on will prime the player to experience things like this. Minecraft can quickly become a survival-terror game when the sand hits the fan. You've got a nice place all laid out when a creeper (dingdong shaped monster that blows up at close quarters) jumps out at you in deep mine that you've gotten lost in. That's where the immersion comes from- the time spent playing the game and the risk of losing it all by just one silly mistake. Frankly, I would have packed the place with TNT, just in case things went sideways.
