what i think would be interesting stats..
« on: April 06, 2001, 11:30:00 AM »
especially to the new guys and those who are actively trying to improve one skill or another..

An "average" stat... Take the top 2-500 pilots and average their stats...  Average K/D, average kills.... average assists... average time to kill...time on line, hit percentage, kill per sortie etc. etc.

This would give the new guys an idea of how they are doing.   where they may need to improve.... where they are really not doing too badly.   A benchmark.

Good idea, I remeber about 5 years ago when I started in Warbirds being a bit 'lost at sea' wondering how I should be doing against others, a rough benchmark. Its all very nice seeing the top scorers but I think new players might be a bit daunted seeing some of the top ace scores and I've seen some throw in the towel because they tried to measure themselves against these guys individual high scores.

I am still confused as to why "time to kill" has any bearing on how good a pilot you are.

The problem with 'Kill/Time' as a stat is that it is heavily dependent on the number of players online at the time.

I've logged in during US evenings and found over 200 online.  Fight's EVERYWHERE and its no trouble at all to knock down opponents in short order.

But most of my flying is done during Asia/Pacific evenings .. where we might have only 20 or so online.  Roughly 7 per country.  I've had to fly for nearly 30 minutes just to SEE a con!

I like this idea.  Nice work lazs.

I agree about the Kill/Time stat being pretty much worthless as well.

I never have cared for the "time to kill" but it must be there for a reason   I never gave it much thought before... posible reasons it there:
  • The current scoring system does not reward people for just getting alt and bouncing. This might be a gameplay issue incoraging pilots to mix it up more by giving another score component opportunity.
  • Discourage the old K/D ratio (eletist)group from forming and spread emphisis on rounding out all aspects of the game to score. Maybe HTC is incouraging us to concentrate on teamwork and have fun with all aspects of the game.
  • Just plain and simple.. the faster you kill people the more effective you are..not to sure about that but ...maybe thats part of it.
  • Most pilots want to experience combat quick and may have a limited time to play. If you give a bit more of a reason to score better by mixing it up faster you get more bang for you buck (win or lose) if you get people in this mode.

I may be way off here.. not even sure??
I never have really been concerned about scoring high because I like to fly just one type of aircraft and fly with wingman. I never will be in the top 100 and my stats are bad in most catagories except K/Ds in a plane type. But I'm happy, love the game and have fun trying to be the best wingman I can be.

I did not come up with the kill/time stat it is simply one of the ones that are tracked.

The more stats tracked the better tho.  for some who fly at peak times tho it is very meaningful.  It tells us something about the arena.  It tells us HOW (all else being equal) we are flying.   certainly, a k/T stat that was quicker (all else being equal) would  indicate that you were getting more deadly or that there was more or less opportunity for action... In any case it is a useful stat for a lot of us and can be ignored by those who have no use for it.

If you find yourself being very much oppossed to a K/T stat being used then perhaps you should examine your motives.  I can't help but think that in allmost every case a very long time per kill or a very short time to kill is an indication of the WAY a person flies.

The K/T stat is in there right now.  I just want it, along with all the others.... averaged.   Any new stat that HT and co come up with will also be welcomed by me average or no.

I know it sounds shallow, but I will admit that in IMOL's Warbirds, I looked forward to the medals awarded for points/kills, I would look at how many kills I had, and how many more to go for my next.
Kinda gave me sumthin' to shoot for.

'Course now we have perk points, but, sumhow it just doesn't fill the spot that the rank/medals did.

Although the "rank" thing to me was meaningless, I dug gettin' the medals, especially after a really good sortie.

I felt the system Hitech and crew at IMOL came up with was kinda like feedback as to how well a pilot was doing.

I've noticed that the stats can be interpeted many different ways, depending on what exactly you are looking for. I.E. overall ranking, fighter ranking, attack ranking, etc.

All score pages of all types serve their own puproses, and there isn't a thing wrong with that. In this particular case it is interesting because the judgement you draw from it is your own. It is a way of finding an average in the established categories, that is all. You draw what conclusions from that information you choose.

I might quickly add that that is exactly what AKDejaVu's "Top Ten" was intended to do- he gives the information, you do what you will with it. I didn't appear on any of the lists, but I did look at them. It gives me some kind of idea of the killing power or usage or whatever I care to glean out of the numbers provided. It also was a volunteer effort by a member of the community and I would always support that even if I don't directly benefit.

Scores are important to some, to others not, and who cares? If score adds depth or goal or whatever it does help flesh out the experience. That is a good thing.

*Edit* Wow! That was obtuse, even for me. What I was driving at was AK caught a lot of heat for putting up a volunteer score page, which ironically could be construed as a "take this for what it is worth" page much like the suggestion forwarded here.
