Monitor issues
« on: February 23, 2013, 08:46:44 AM »
Hopefully someone has an idea what's wrong cause I'm completely stumped.

Recently I started using Dual Monitors and occasionally I am getting a very annoying issue with videos/images. The first time it happened when I was viewing an image in Firefox, the next was viewing youtube in Firefox, and I got this screen:

The screen becomes garbled like that until I close the window that was open at the time (Firefox so far). The issue also occurs again after closing and reopening the window, it takes a reboot to fix it; it also only happens on the screen that has the window open, if I move the window to my other monitor it messes that one up and the other works fine. It happens at random so it's quite frustrating.

DxDiag;

Monitors;
Acer 22" X223W via DVI
Hanns-G 19" HC194D via VGA w/ DVI Adapter (recently replaced capacitors)

If anyone has an idea of what could be causing it that would be great cause I'm just plain ol' stumped!
Thanks for any help.

Your video memory numbers don't match up, and I'm wondering if that card has enough power to run two monitors.

I remember Skuzzy going back and forth with someone else on the boards with his card not reporting the right number totals. I don't think they ever figured out what the issue was.

Is it doing the same thing if you only use one monitor, that one with the garbled image? If it does, try with the other monitor's cable, in both connectors of the video card.

Since this seems to happen with Firefox only, try resetting Fox:

To reset preferences: At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the Help menu. On the menu bar, click the Help menu At the top of the Firefox window, click the Help menu and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.... Firefox will start up with the Firefox Safe Mode dialog.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Seeing Bizman mentioned a cable..... My wifes computer had a blue tinge to it and it was driving her nuts. I thought the monitor was going after checking the connections. Just for the heck of it I put in a new cable and TA-DA! no problems since. The cable looked fine, no damage anywhere, pins and plugs looked good, but it was bad. Just a thought.

   That was my friend Bino's computer that was showing the wrong vid ram numbers!

       Strange because he has the same 79xx series card as do I,mine shows the proper amount of ram. Bino has an intel based system and he had it setup in crossfire with 2 58xx cards{IIRC} then upgraded to a single 79xx.

   I noticed your DXdiag show 2 cards,are you running crossfire 79xx's ??  I'm wondering if there may be a glitch in the 79xx cards on systems that use or used crossfire.

      I must admit I'm over my head here but seems so strange things happening with the latest AMD cards,makes me wish I stuck with Nvidea on my lastest machine.

   I know it doesnt help much but I thought it might give you a clue to help solve the problem.

Thanks for the help so far.  :)

The Memory not matching, I'm honestly not sure I've ever seen them match!  :lol If there is something there that is wrong though any extra info on that would be nice.
As for the power to run 2 monitors, I would hope it does as I run a 7970 (just realized the DxDiag only says 7900 series). So it should easily have enough power for dual screen.

I haven't tried a single one since the issue happened, but I've been running the card since December without ever seeing that issue til now. Just hooked up dual monitor about a week ago and seen it 3 times now at the most random and uncontrollable circumstances. I honestly have no idea how to even reproduce it to test it. I do have a new cable already on the way as I am replacing this VGA cable with HDMI/DVI, never had an issue with the DVI I have had for a few years now (though I've had bad luck with things dieing lately!)
I will try resetting Firefox though tonight and see if it happens any after that.

I only run a single 7970 (Neither Mobo nor wallet is capable of CrossX). It seems to be showing each monitor as its own "card" in the DxDiag (going off the resolutions listed). I don't use the CCC to control Dual-Screen if that would make any difference there, I just use Windows 'Screen Resolution' to set them up.

Aside from this strange, and completely random issue, there have been no issues with the card or Dual-Screen.

Again, thanks for the help!

An observation: Those two monitors are significantly different in resolution and refresh rates, and both are being run by the same Windows driver.

I think I'd try installing the latest drivers for at least one of the monitors if not both. I never bothered with monitor drivers until I found it necessary to set up a dual monitor system of my own. YMMV
Easy in-game again.

Having used something for a short while without problems doesn't mean it is proven faultless. Problems like cold joints arise often after the product has been used for some time, being subject to thermal expansion and vibration caused by the fan.

Example: I rebuilt a Lenovo desktop with a brand new hard disk a month ago. Worked like charm. A couple of weeks ago I helped the happy owner to transfer some videos from her cell phone, still working perfectly. A week ago she called and told the computer won't boot. Cloning software couldn't even find the hdd, Western Digital diagnostic program resulted error #132 (Command error) which is gibberish to me.
