M8 Greyhound reload time
« on: January 17, 2013, 07:41:38 AM »
When I tested this tank offline I was getting reload times of 1.5 seconds, which seems at least one second too fast even for speedy gunners.

It is fast enough to shoot a train engine 7 times..........and then have the train pass by undamaged.

I should have been a little more clear I think. If the shot takes 1 second for the sound to play, and 1.5 seconds for the reload, then the reload does not have time to complete before the second shot goes off even though it is 2.5 seconds between shots. 2.5 seconds might be what HTC decided, but it seems too fast. I know a gunner can reload in 2.5 seconds, but I don't believe they can reload and then fire that quickly. Yes, maybe the tank is already under-gunned, but an unrealistic firing rate?

37mm is a pretty small round.

What is the fire rate supposed to be?  I don't remember.

EDIT:
I forgot to add that it may take longer than one would expect because of the cramped interior, however.

I am not so much thinking the cramped interior, and I have no trouble with a three second reload time the first time. After the first reload though I think it takes more time. I think that is what the issue is here. If the gunner is holding a round, no problem hitting 2.5 seconds. When he has to reach for another round I dont think he can realistically do that in the same time.

Either way. If you want to play a 1 second tank fire sound and then a 1.5 second reload sound, then the second sound will still be playing when the tank fires. I think (now) that the problem is the length of time the game has allowed for the first sound to play is too long. Also, the reload sound should take 2.5 seconds, which I believe is the fastest a gunner could reload the cannon. So, maybe these two sounds should be merged for this one tank.

I saw this and had to comment... sorry about the "brought back from the dead" bump...

The reload time for the M8 is accurate.  I just tested it and it still is 2.5 seconds.  Also, for reference I put below ALL of the reload times for tanks in AH:

King Tiger: 10 sec
Tiger I: 7 sec
Panther: 6 sec
Panzer IV: 6 sec
Firefly: 8 sec
M4/76mm: 5.4 sec
M18: 5.4 sec
M4/75mm: 4 sec
M3/75mm: 4 sec
M8: 2.5 sec
T34/76: 9 sec
T34/85: 7.5 sec

37mm's are small rounds, and you can probably hold a few in your hand/lap and just throw em into the gun and close it relatively quick. If you have shells at the ready then it shouldn't be too hard to reload quickly.

Guys! It's about the way the tank is portrayed, and I am sorry but no you will only be able to hold one round. It will take longer to fire the third round. The average rate of fire is slower than portrayed. The game is only accurate if you consider only two rounds fired.

When I made the sound for this tank, fire and reload at least, I just mixed the two sounds together. If you use separate sounds the game will not play them fast enough. I went so far as to record a WWII reenactment group that is very practiced and polished at using the M8. The first two rounds were very quick (still not quite as fast as 2.5 seconds) but round number three came in closer to 4.5 seconds and that is not in the heat of battle.

M4A3(75)       4.05
M4A3(76)W    5.35

Hmm... the Panzer IV F is in fact 5 seconds.  Interesting.  Either I completely missed it when testing or HTC changed it and did not report it in their change logs.  Either way, good to know.  FWIW, I'm not so sure just how accurate that is.  The ammo storage, gunner position, and breach action is the same for both the F and H versions.  Ah well... HTC works in mysterious ways sometimes.  ;)

I double checked the rest as well.  Other than a debatable 5.35 vs 5.4 on the M4/76mm and M18, my list stands.  When calculating the # seconds between shots, be sure and divide by 1 less shot fired.  The first shot simply starts the timer.   :aok

In regards to reload times in any tank or gv: I can't speak for HTC but there is plenty of data out there making mention of reload times or "shots per minute" for most tanks in WWII.  There are a few different factors and it is up to HTC to determine which ones to use, not use, sort of use, etc.  For instance, I have 2 printed sources that both reference original German sources that say the Panther could fire "6-10 rounds a minute".  Obviously, if HTC used the same references then they took the liberty of using the best possible reload time (6 seconds between shots).  In the case of the Panther, the breach mechanics (manual vs auto reject, reload actions, etc), ammo magazine location, gunner and loader positions, weight of the ammo, crew experience and training, etc, all contribute to the factors in how long it takes to reload.  Each and every tank can run through those characteristics and "score" itself.  In terms of the M8 Greyhound, the ammo is small, light, and the gun has an auto eject.  There is a video on YouTube showing British gunners in a tank in North Africa (not sure which tank) firing their 2 pdr (40mm) gun in a very quick manner, I'd say much the same if not faster than the 2.5 seconds reload we have in the M8 Greyhound. The British loader literally has a round in each hand and when the breach cleared he had the next round inserted and the breach slamming home almost in a blur. In the same motion he reached down with his empty hand (in to a box) and grabbed another round while the gunner fired and the process started over.

Other than the Panzer IV F2 and H difference (same round, same gun!), I think HTC is accurate in their reload times.  I wonder about the King Tiger and the Firefly though.  I know the Firefly was awkward thanks to the breach being turned °90 and the turret being cramped, but the King Tiger has a spacious turret meant to facilitate gunner/loader operations.

EDIT:  I just checked the Panzer IV reload times *again*.  Interesting find: the H = 6 sec, the F/1 (short barrel = 6 sec, the F/2 (long barrel) = 5 seconds.  I do believe THAT is a bug, mistake, error, etc.  The F2 and H have the same cartridge, the F1 had a short stubby case very similar to the US M4/75mm.  If HTC wanted there to be a different reload time thrown in to the mix of the Panzer IV variant I'd like to think they would have given the F1 a slightly less reload time thanks to the smaller ammo.  *shrugs*

I tested the tanks by holding down the triggers while recording the audio and then opening the audio in Adobe Audition and measuring the time between shots.
