Flares like this are a BIG problem for any proposed trip to Mars. This radiation can be deadly to astronauts and it is a problem without a present solution.

We are at solar maximum right now, and the biggest for more than a hundred years.

Pardon me, the 2012 end of the world comment should have read: At the time in 2012 we were not yet at solar maximum but rather on the upward climb of solar activity. I should have clarified.

But saying "biggest for more than a hundred years" does not make the this solar maximum "the biggest"... Considering that data has only been recorded over the past 100 years.
