Superforts Over Fortress Europe - June 1945

Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's West Wall defenses achieved their objective, and in early June of 1944 the invading Allied armies were hurled back into the chilly waters of the English Channel.
The spectacular and tragic failure of the Allied D-Day invasion right on the beaches of Normandy resulted in a strategic stalemate along the western coast of Europe.
This allowed the Third Reich to transfer forces eastward to face the Russians.  In turn, the Soviet Red Army's 1944 Summer Offensive, "Operation Bagration", bogged down with heavy casualties, much like their failed "Operation Mars" of 1942.
With the land armies deadlocked on both Western and Eastern Fronts, the Allied aerial assault on Germany escalated.
The new Boeing B-29 "Superfortress" bomber joined the battle…
