Looks like a partially finished coat of new gloss black paint and a good tinting job on the canopy. Nice find!

I recall reading that the P-47 has a 25 gallon-ish oil capacity.

I met this guy at the Pima Air Museum a few years ago. He had this picture in his hand when we walked in the hangar. It was quite interesting hearing his recollection of the event, especially the approach and landing.
