Rubber Bullets? Warping? Sheesh
« on: August 17, 2014, 12:56:25 PM »
Here's the first trace to LWM.  Been consistent 100% packet loss at 12 for a few days.  (I wouldn't know prior to that).  Any advice would be helpful thanks.

the next to the last hop is ok to have that packet loss. It doesn't return the info. As for the rest, it doesn't look pretty.

Ya, ugly actually.  Thing is, I am not smart at all on such matters.  Called Tech-Support for provider (ADSL) and they pretty much were clueless.  "Speed" is actually right where it's supposed to be.  I also bypassed my router and wired straight from modem to computer and got the same results.  So, now I'm thinking it's either the modem... or some kind of crap equipment the ISP is using.  I can't get into the modem to even SEE if there are settings to fool with (big problem there I would think).  But even if I could... I really don't know what settings there are that would make a difference... not that I can't find out but you get the meaning.

I'm not an expert but it looks like you are getting packet losses from your own equipment, i.e. your router or modem at the first hop.

There is packet loss, at your connection.  That is not good.  It does taint the rest of the results.

By "my connection"... you mean modem? (Given I had the same issue on my other computer a week ago AND with or without Router makes no difference?).

I really do not know what to tell you about fixing the packet loss at your connection.  It could be a multitude of issues.  I assume you have simply tried a power cycle to see if that helped.

It could be as simple as your connection getting hammered from some P2P people.  If you inherited an actively use P2P IP address from someone else, it could take a few days for that to drain.

Have tried a number of things.  Fiddled some with MTU settings which seemed to help a little, bypassed router again... etc.  Seem's as though the biggest improvement came with uninstalling Comodo Internet Security (Free version).  Before the improvement, I had tried running Comodo in "Game Mode" as well as exiting the program from the start menu (and after disabling the Firewall).  So naturally... could be MTU, could be Comodo, could be some other crap.

Modem is ISP provided Comtrend and is at least 5yrs old.. which I then run through an older Linksys WirelessG Router.  Would I be better off with a ADSL Modem/Router Combo anyway? (newer and all).

If you are running wireless, then that is where the packet loss is probably happening, in conjunction with anti-xxxx software.  That combination would be really messy.

There are just too many issues using wireless with the game.  Wireless is prone to bit errors, and it is also half-duplex (it can send OR receive, not both like a wired connection can).

I'm not using the wireless end on this computer (that I game on).  Wall Phone Jack - DSL Modem - Router(ethernet) - computer.  Two other computers in the house may or may not be using the wireless at any given time... but they aren't gaming or P2P'ing or anything of the like.

If you by-pass the router and still see packet loss on that first hop, then you need to contact your ISP about it.  It could be a line issue, or the modem could be going bad, but they should be able to test the modem signal on their end to see if the source of the problem is your modem or not.

2 things you might try and then do pingplot again..

1 update the firmware on your modem and router.

2 replace the wires leading to your computer as they will wear out with time.
