Reports of FSB agents violating Estonia's border, kidnapping an officer of the Internal Security Service using the ruse of a police informant (the officer in question is part of Estonia's efforts at cracking down on organized crime), and displaying him in Moscow as a spy.

I think that with respect to Ukraine and the Baltic countries, at least until November, 2016, there would be no substantial opposition to Russia taking any of them.  I have a suspicion that Russia will take at least the Ukraine before then, if not some of the others.

Russia will never conquer the Ukraine; it is simply not in their interest. They will annex the parts of eastern Ukraine that have a predominantly ethnically Russian population, and oil and gas... Or they will support the new mini-states in that area which will become satellite-states to Moscow anyway. However, it is not in Russia's interest to occupy a huge country like the Ukraine with a 40 million strong hostile population.

I hereby amend my post to be "I have a suspicion that Russia will take at least a significant portion of the Ukraine before then, if not some of the others."

Not that I completely disagree, but what difference do you see in such interest between the previous time and today?

The Baltic countries are NATO members and any attack on them is highly unlikely as they will surely spark a war with the EU and USA. NATO has already deployed air and naval units to the area and you guys have sent the 1st cavalry division to the Baltic and Poland as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Putin is no mere charismatic corporal... He's a KGB colonel and a very sly and intelligent man. No way he's going to risk a war with NATO.

There would be no risk of war if he did so.  US and EU leadership have no stomach for one and Putin knows it.  There are far too many "realists" in leadership positions who think it best to simply appease with a few sacrifical lambs. Deja vu..... Europe 1938-1939 anyone?

People have said Putin would never invade mainland Ukraine after he took Crimea, and look what happened. I think he might just take the rest of it.

Lets at least hope that history will repeat itself in regard to what happened to the party who started the fighting.

By the way the Russians have been publicly complaining about certain Estonians recruiting spies and this kidnapped officer was named as one recruiter. Who knows, may be some truth to that.
