WiFi port for desktop
« on: January 05, 2015, 01:04:57 PM »
Well I may be away from the game for a week, just moved out of my parents place into my buddies basement, the router is upstairs, but i was wanting to know if anyone uses or can point me in the right direction  for a WiFi USB port, or what ever the proper name is.

Even the cheapest ones seem to work well enough. For a better connection between stairs turn the antenna of the router horizontal, it may help a little. But please, read further.

As you may know, WiFi can cause issues with the game. Unlike a wired connection it isn't bi-directional, meaning information goes only in one direction at a time. This said, you might like either a wire running from the router to your computer (100 yards is the maximum length). If your buddy doesn't want holes drilled through his floors, walls and ceilings or a wire snailing around every corner and doorway, get a pair of Powerline Ethernet adapters which will run the signal from one power outlet to another.  According to this they aren't necessarily too expensive, either: http://www.cnet.com/topics/networking/best-networking-devices/power-line-adapters/

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

+1 for power line adapters. They're the best way to create a gaming network on a property that can't be cut open for recabling.

Don't powerline adaptors cause all kinds of line noise?

What sort of noise? Radio playing out of power socket?

Years ago when I read about powerline networking for the first time a friend, a radio amateur, claimed they would cause interfere with radio signals. That was over a decade ago and the devices still exist. Isn't there a law or standard or something like that about electromagnetic interference? IIRC I've seen stickers on lawn mowers and microwave ovens etc. saying that they comply to such standard. Yet it's widely known that WiFi can have issues caused by the very same devices.

What I'm trying to say is that an intact device should not cause any kind of trouble to other devices either connected to it or being near it. Poorly designed/manufactured or defect gear can even be dangerous and shouldn't be used at all. If powerline adaptors were really harmful they would have been long prohibited. Since they've been around so long without being banned, they don't likely pose a threat.

Ham radios are notorious for causing interference. They can't be compared to powerline adapters in any way however.

I second that. Before cell phones became mainline we could occasionally hear someone talking on our radio, totally overriding the original broadcast. As our kids were very small back then, my wife sometimes got worried about their safety when a foreign male voice interrupted the radio broadcast. Not to mention the same happening with the baby sleeping outside in her cart and the voice coming through the baby monitor!

+2. My house is all concrete, and REALLY doesn't play nice with the wifi, so we run powerline adapters to every room. They're GREAT, full speed connection and no issues I've found so far with 10 hours a day of myself and my room mate playing games non-stop online.

None. It hasn't lost connection, and with both my room mate and I playing online at the same time, we're both seeing full-speed on the up and download.

CB'ers running illegal dirty amps are usually the cause for RFI. They are only allowed per FCC to run 5 watts output only (unless that rule has been removed, but I highly doubt it)
