Fireproof your data
« on: March 11, 2016, 02:40:52 PM »
Linus made this video back in August 2013 about the IOSafe N2 NAS enclosure. This is one way of protecting data, though I think offsite is probably the best way to avoid getting it burned up!

I'm paranoid so I keep my external hard drive backup in a fireproof mini-safe.  (I don't keep my backup drive connected since it would seem to me that if ransomware infected my computer it would clobber the backup drive as well if it were constantly connected.  Of course that means backups aren't done very often.)

You're not paranoid, that's common sense. I had a customer who used an external drive as an extension of his storage. The drive was connected all the time, placed on his desktop PC right above the power supply. Well... it spun to death, partially because the PSU made it run hotter than designed. Some 1500 photos lost etc...

External drives are meant to be connected only when needed and the data should also remain in the original place. That's how everyone should do it. A fireproof safe or a storage outside the house is simply sane if you really care for what you've saved.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

I use an external 1tb passport, and two 500gb external drives only connected when I backup, is the cloud safe? talk about paranoid I still have the same thoughts as when the cloud started years ago, I imagine a bunch of slimy creeps opening up my files and looking at my pictures, lol

MISO = Microsoft, IBM, SAP, and Oracle.

Guess which one is not investing time, effort, and cash on securing the cloud?
