Help with 1v1 - Vudak vs. Joach1m
« on: September 14, 2016, 11:31:43 PM »
Please note these were filmed in AH3 and you will therefore need to open the film viewer from your AH3 folder, or they won't work.  My films currently default to the AH2 viewer, so I need to first open the AH3 viewer and then open the film within it.

Hi all,

So I spent a few hours in the DA with Joach1m tonight…  I think I won 2 or 3 fights and he won 26 or 27.  Clearly he is a superior player but I’d like to do a little bit better than 10% in the future and turn to the community for help…  We wouldn’t want poor ol’ Jo to think going to the DA with me is a charity case after all :D

I’m providing a few films here in the hopes that you can assist me in identifying trends in my flying and things I can work on/revisit.  Jo quickly killed me a number of times but I'm trying to share films where I put up a good enough show to at least last a short while so there's more to view/learn from.  I’m going to give a few brief thoughts of my own on each as well.

(Jo – I forgot to film one or two so the fight numbers are just what I’m calling the films and may be slightly different than yours).

Fight #2
http://www.mediafire.com/download/n2vt8e8dm0w23mr/Jo2.ahf

-I feel like I was reactive in this fight.  At approximately 30 seconds, I have my lift vector pointed towards earth while he has his pointed up and I feel this makes things awkward for me.  I noticed myself doing this a lot tonight and am open to some ideas on better ways to go about my fights.
-Jo was polite at 1:07 – he should have taken that shot.
-I stall at 1:43 or so and that’s the end of me

Fight #8
http://www.mediafire.com/download/l4jhxu1yk457y3y/Jo8.ahf

-I was more proactive in this fight and tried to keep my E better.  Frankly, I probably should have won this one but my aim sucks and I blew my chance.  He connected with his shot shortly thereafter and gave me a pw.
-I think I could have improved around 1:06 – 1:09 – he threw me with how rapidly he ascended and I don’t like how I positioned myself angularly there.

Fight #10
http://www.mediafire.com/download/ta2vi1b452kwico/Jo10.ahf

-I tried for a shot at 2:25 (I think, I can’t read my own handwriting now) and lost position as a result
-I feel like I’m not gaining enough altitude in the rolling scissors.  I noticed this a lot from the films tonight – Jo consistently seems to get 5-10 mph slower in the scissors and slightly higher.

Fight #12
http://www.mediafire.com/download/qats402cr8des4u/Jo12.ahf

-Another example where I feel like I’m not gaining enough altitude in my maneuvers

Fight #24
http://www.mediafire.com/download/8o5r4yvd68og6xf/Jo24.ahf

-My specific question about this flight is how I moved close to Jo at 2:01 – I feel like this was a mistake/poor choice?

I appreciate any commentary and hope it helps me (and others) improve.  Go ahead and skewer me :)

 :salute and thank you, Joach1m!

Just watched Fight 2--
58 second mark, you reverse your turn and meet him high aspect...he may or may not have had a shot there...

But in the subsequent rolling scissors...pay attention to where your lift vector is in this fight..you have lift vector in front and when you pull, you are essentially trying to pull in front of him. Put it slightly behind him (in lag), and do the same scissors....

Here is a snapshot at 1:45 of the fight--

Easiest way to visualize lift vector is to think of a point on top of your head ...and then think "where I place this and pull, my nose will end up".

And then we have lift vector extended...

If you watch the films from Joach1m's cockpit you can probably see where you make it easier for him and where you make it more difficult.

Thanks for your replies, Gents.

Dobs - yeah, lag pursuit is something I've been working on only recently really - one of those mistakes I've made for a very long time so much so that it's pretty much muscle memory now and I need to unlearn what I'm doing.  Latrobe had a good post that I found on a search a few months ago.  http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,359053.msg4761802.html#msg4761802

FLS that's good advice and I'll certainly seek those out.  I'm hoping to spark a conversation about 1v1 here that can hopefully help me and others.  If you get a chance to review some of the films, do you notice things other than the lead vs. lag pursuit in rolling scissors Dobs mentioned?

Thanks!  :salute

Joach1m's films would be slightly more accurate but you can watch from his cockpit on your own films and you can see what he's doing with lead and lag pursuit as well as seeing how you make things easier or harder for him.

If you turn trails on you'll see how lead pursuit can offset your turn circle from the bandit and how lag pursuit can align flight paths.

I didn't plan on giving these films out to everyone but idc at this point.

This is damn near every fight.

Let me know what you guys think, I'll have more detailed responses after class.

Just got back from a 3 month break and my flying isn't where it used to be.

Thanks :aok I will check them out tonight or tomorrow.

I have trouble utilizing/visualizing lag pursuit in a rolling scissors sometimes because it is counter intuitive -- my brain is telling me to pull hard so you don't gain, but by pulling hard and moving to lead pursuit, I'm actually helping you gain.

I have a similar struggle with turn rate v. Radius -- I get the concept, but I have yet to learn the sight picture of when to employ one or the other as either can potentially backfire depending on the starting position. I worked with kingpin on this a few months back and it was helpful, but we were in a controlled setting to help me grasp the concept.

Does that make sense or am I rambling?

In a rolling scissors you're flying a barrel roll which is basically a loop so you go easy on the bottom and pull hard at the top. Watch the horizon as well as the bandit to keep the barrel roll tight and minimize forward motion. You generally fly lag pursuit at the bottom of the scissors and you can usually fly lead pursuit at the top when inverted and pulling hard with your gravity assist.

Radius and rate is easy to remember as nose to nose and nose to tail. Turn rate and turn radius both are always important but going nose to nose favors turn radius and tail chasing or being chased favors turn rate.

One common error is cutting across the bandit's turn in lead pursuit for a shot you can't get which leaves you with a corner you can't turn but your max turn attempt leaves you slower than the bandit. This happens often in vertical turns. If you can make the shot fine, otherwise consider lag pursuit to put you on the bandit's flight path. This let's you fly an easier turn and lose less speed. Think of it as flying for position before flying for the shot.

I had a chance to review joach1m's films.  Aside from the fact that I'm hanging myself out there slow and just flying back and forth across his guns often, I noticed some differences in style, namely what you trainers/former trainers are talking about.  I see a lot of situations where "I" would continue to pull hard and go for the shot, but he just eases back a bit and "flies for position" like you said, FLS - like he's in no real rush.  He ends up having more E than me in most fights which lets him maneuver while I'm wallowing.

I also notices some situations where he'd, for example, be making a left turn and have an opportunity to reverse after me, but rather than do that he just keeps making his left turn and gets me when he completes his revolution.  It's a smoother option and again he ends up having more E than me as a result of it.

Thanks for sharing those, joach1m!

Ahhh vodak is observant :) . Yes, in a rolling scissor I'm baiting you into making the turn I want. (Right hand) by doing this I'm  giving myself a lag pursuit advantage and will eventually wind up on your 6.
