Best Video Card for AH III?
« on: September 01, 2016, 09:44:26 AM »
To enjoy all the eye candy of Aces High III -- moving all the graphics sliders "to 11," so to speak -- while still enjoying frame rates of 60 fps, what video card would be best?

Geforce GTX 1080 or better up to 1440p. If you're planning to play on a 4K monitor, then the Titan X (Pascal)

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

A couple of folks have told me that a 3 GB GTX 1060 should be more than adequate for AH3 with full on graphics.  I'm sure that must also depend on how much monitor the machine is running.  As an occasional gamer, playing Aces High only, and given the price difference, Bizman, or others I am interested in your opinions on whether you think the 1060 would be sufficient for a 1080p monitor, and if I get extravagant I may eventually go for a 1440p monitor, and whether the 1060 would run AH3 at 60 fps on a 1440p monitor as well.  So maybe the my questions are focused more on getting the best bang for the $.  I'm in the planning process of building a new puter.   Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm using a 1600p monitor and I'm seriously thinking about getting a GTX1060, believing it would outperform my current Radeon HD 6970 by a huge margin. I've tried to minimize the variables and I'm getting about 40 FPS in average. In the open skies 59, in the tower and more crowded situations about 30-ish, even less. For what I've learned, the GTX 970 should be able to run AH3 with most bells and whistles at 60 FPS on a 1080p monitor, the GTX 1060 has been told to be an even better performer.

Short answer: Very tempting.

However, if money is no issue at all, the GTX 1070 might provide better longevity in case your hunger for pixel count keeps growing.

Thanks for your insights Bizman.  BTW, I'm getting similar results as you on my "outdated" machine using a GTX 460 with graphics turned way down.  Good enough for now, but time to upgrade for me I think.

Both Mutha and Popeye have reported impressive results but I believe they got the EVGA 1060 SC 6G version, http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=06G-P4-6163-KR. I'm not saying the 3G card won't perform well, just don't want to take the chance to save $40-$50

It appears to be out of stock right now. Be patient to avoid paying too much. It's $260 direct from EVGA when in stock. A few days ago it was the same from New Egg but now the New Egg price is $540 with the same card showing as out of stock for $260. You have a choice of Gigabyte, Asus, and MSI in the $250-$300 range. Personally I'm waiting for the  EVGA GTX 1060 SSC to become available which will sell for $280 but has 2 fans as opposed to the single fan SC.
Balrog in game. Some day my performance may justify the name. LOL

Thanks Condor.  Interesting that Newegg is "out of stock"....unless you're willing to pay $540....you're most of the way to a 1080 for that price!
