Ford Transmission Advice
« on: March 22, 2017, 07:57:10 PM »
I'm currently rebuilding a '67 F100.  Is there any way to get a bellhousing that will fit an FMX transmission and a 302 engine?

Check out performance automotive warehouse. They have all sorts of transmission adapters. I got one from them years ago to adapt a Ford t18a to a 302. Worked great.

I know the 70-ish Cougars with the 351C used an FMX.  Pretty sure all the 302's had C4's attached to them.

sorta unrelated....I had a '64 Falcon Futura convertible with a 302 Boss, manual shift, Hurst Inline speed shifter (It was a project car from the local Community College Auto Shop)

It was the QUICKEST car (But not the fastest) in Forest Lake Minnesota in 1977 (Only because my buddy's 1969 Chevelle SS 396 was in the shop for 2 months!)  :devil

Branch, they did indeed use FMX transmissions in 351C, and 351W equipped cars which has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as your 302. You will also need the separator plate, and possibly a different torque converter.

Yeah the converter will be different. I wasn't aware that the 351s were the same pattern.

Nice vid Frenchy!

The FMX is an auto trans, not a very good one either!!

1 note,I didnt see you cross torque any of the bolts!!!!! :devil

Ya it's only a clutch housing but still good practice to always cross torque newly machined surfaces!

I used to put clutch assemblies on ford engines,we used a 4 bolt driver so all bolts were torqued at the same time. On automatic engines I put the base plates on!

Not to be a wise arse but......it's called a C-6

yes you can get the bell housing, cant remember if the flex plate and convertor need to be changed also.

Personally I would just toss a C-6 into it, much better trans, but thats just me

It's not a C-6. They use completely different gear sets.
If there is nothing wrong with the FMX then there should be no reason it wouldn't be just fine behind the 302 for a daily driver or weekend cruiser. If it needs to be rebuilt that can get expensive and parts are not always readily available.

Doing an internet search I found several listings for bellhousings for the FMX with the small block Ford bolt pattern.

If I was going to put an automatic in that truck, I would use a beefed up C6.  Basically, the FMX is a cast iron case version of the C4, but more slushy.  It is only slightly stronger than a C4.  A properly built C4 would be better than a stock FMX, but it is still not the best choice for a truck.

A properly built C6 would be a better choice for a truck.  Just remember, unlike the C4, the C6 has the bellhousing integrated, which requires purchasing the correct transmission.  The one for the 351W will work for the 302.

I am assuming the truck will be used as a truck, and not a race car.
