I've heard mixed things regarding the range/room chat function

There is no range text channel. It's called 'Room' and it's opereating entirely independent from the voice range channel.

Inflight, 'Room' text chat can be read by anyone who spawned/took off from the same base as you, regardless of range. Someone right next to you who happened to lift off from a different base will never see your 'room' text.

For both voice and text? Do people have to have range tuned in To receive?

I'm not sure if I understand this question.

There is 'range' voice, which is always on (not a channel which you can tune to or detune from), and a 'room' text channel, which you can choose to tune to or not.
Both are completely unrelated to each other, as explained above.

The problem is that they aren't absolutely totally unrelated. They share the same color.

Confuses people into thinking their operation is somewhat related, too.

Maybe the easy solution isn't to change the behavior, but just the color.

Well, functionally they are, but you have a very good point there  :old:

So perhaps the "room" text channel should bleed over to people in close "range" also. What do y'all think?

I think think would increase the confusion.

I think th current iteration is more confusing as there is less use for a room chat than a range chat. When in the tower the range chat should work fine for people in the tower and doing base defense

The most obvious channel would be field-numbered channels. This would work both for the offence as well as defence. Attack field X tune field X. Defend field X, tune field X too.

Agree..  who actually uses the room chat while in the tower? Maybe if you're planning a mission?
