As the war in Europe was drawing to a close it was thought the Nazi High Command might try to stage a last stand at Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" mountain retreat at Berchestgarden. So on April 25th 1945 Bomber Command launched a daylight bombing raid on the area with 361 Lancasters carrying a mix of 250, 500, 1,000 and 4,000 lb bombs, plus a few carrying a 12,000 lb Tallboy bomb. Six of the Lancasters had their wing tips and vertical tails painted yellow so they could act as formation leaders. The Berchestgarden raid was Bomber Command's last major operation of the war and badly damaged the Eagle's Nest, as well as the nearby SS barracks and Hermann Goring's residence
One of the six formation leaders on the raid was this 100 Squadron aircraft named "Grog's The Shot" flown on this occasion by Squadron Leader Hedley Scott. It survived the war with a tally of 60 bombing missions and one kill of a Ju 88 night fighter.
